Hi I'm not new to the forum, just new to the classic section. I just purchased a 89 Toyota PU with a 22re 5 speed.
It ran for a week and then the alternator took a shit while getting smogged. Luckily it still passed. So I replaced the alternator with one out of a automatic over the manual because Autozone claimed the auto made 10 more amps. Hopefully that was okay, not sure why they would offer 2 different ones.
After that I drove it for a week and the fuel pump went out. So I replaced that.
A week later and the truck won't start now. The starter has been replaced in the last year with a lifetime warranty Autozone one (which I heard don't have the best reputations). To me what it sounds like is the solenoid is engaging but not connecting if that makes sense. When I turn the key I can here the one click and as long as I hold the key I can hear a humming sound till I release it. I've tried banging on the starter to see if it'd help but nothing. I checked the volts at the battery and at the starter both read 12.9. The battery is mounted in the bed so it has a power wire running to the starter and a wire off that the goes to fuse panel the powers everything else. I checked the wires between the battery and starter and everything looked fine. Is there anything else I'm forgetting to check and rule out before pulling the starter?
Also if the Autozone starters are dog shit, any recommendations on what to buy? I just want to drive the thing haha. I thought these 22re's were bullet proof.
