Help…what did I screw up? (plug change, throttle body and MAF clean)

Well, it's about time for another "HELP ME" thread.

Today I changed:
oil
plugs
plug wires
PCV

Cleaned: throttle body and MAF

I'm getting "VCS OFF" and "VSC TRAC" lights.
And the throttle is delayed. (I have to push the gas pedal way down before it starts moving)

Other info: I was jacking with the piece the throttle cable pulls on thinking there was something wrong with it. as it turns out it's normal for a 2001. I think I put it back right.

one time i took my air filter out, and then sprayed some dust off the filter with compressed air, and then when I put it back in it wouldnt start. waited like 15 minutes and it was fine.

Does it idle rough? If so make sure your plugs are wired properly and if not then check all vacuum lines.

it actually idles fine. I did check the plug wires, thinking I may have done that wrong.
My vacuum hoses aren't in great shape, but they look ok. I'll double check those.

Sounds like either the plug for your MAF isn't fully seated or maybe the sensor is still wet from the cleaning. I'm assuming you used the MAF specific cleaner on it, right? (I killed one with brake cleaner on a different vehicle of mine).

Are you throwing any CEL's?

I'll double check that guy, and yeah, MAF specific cleaner. I used some q-tips to gently clean down in the MAF. I hope I didn't damage it.

The only lights on the dash are the VSC OFF and VSC TRAC

Those warning lights come one for almost all problems. They were constantly going off on my 4th gen due to a loose gas cap.

Other things you might check while you are in there is that you didn't bump the plug for the TPS while you were checking the throttle cable.

Now I'm wondering if it isn't related to the TPS. If it push the throttle in just a little (enough to pull the cable and turn the thing it pulls just a bit) the lights go off.

How fragile is the TPS? I kind of hammered on the throttle body a little getting some screws loose.

Its just a potentiometer (sp) so not that fragile. That said they do go bad.

You have to re-connect your throttle cable.

If your engine is drive by wire there is no TPS to replace. The hole Throttle Body needs replaced. Toyota will not sell you just the stepper motor that opens the throttle plate.

Surely not. That just seems crazy to me. But it would be my luck

If it idles rough them start working your way through the plugs, wires, and coil packs. Check and re-gap the plugs while you are in there. Ain't automotives fun!
The motor should throw a code soon to help with diagnosis.

Did you use oem plugs? Very important to use the oem twin electrode plugs on these motors. Have the codes read and see what the ecu is reporting for fault codes.

That is the case. Apparently it needs to be calibrated at the factory to work right. Best to look for a junkyard TB if you need one because the price of a new one will make you faint.

I think I got it licked.
I puled and cleaned the MAF again, and I adjusted the throttle cable. I noticed the VSC lights would go off if I pushed the throttle in just a bit, then I noticed the throttle cable had a LOT play in it.
The throttle is much more responsive now and the lights turned off. I don't know why I wasn't getting those lights before though.

She runs and drives great now. Feel like a new truck
