help with diagnostic

So I swapped in my optima from my pick up and still nothing. I traced all the wires between the battery qnd starter and all seem to be ok I'm hoping to pull th starter this weekend and hqve it tested again and possibly rebuild it while its out or replace it if bad... after that I am out of ideasis there any way to make removing the starter easier besides just wiggling it through the wires and suspension
 
I know that toyota had issues with the starter relays under the dash on the 2nd gen and I have a similar issue sometimes when it's cold I have to try and start 2 or 3 times max. Good luck!

Mine did something similar with no power sometimes and power at others.
I had my son sit in the driver seat with the key to the (on) position.
Went under the hood and started moving wires until the dash lit back up. It turned out to be the negative wire from the battery to the fuse box next to it with a very bad connection.

The dash lights up as it should and everything does its pre start check if you will call it that (abs, fuel pump ect.) And when I turn the key to start it the starter just clicks once and I can hear the fuel pump going for as long as I hold the key but it will not turn over. However if I jump it with another vehicle it will start but I have to hold the key for a few seconds before it will even crank over. I have checked fuses and replaced the battery but no change so I'm hoping its just as easy as a new starter but at the same time I don't want to invest a lot into the 3.0 as I would like to swap in a 3rz
 
Check the power wire(battery to starter) for high resistance. Also do this to the negative(ground). Use a digital volt meter on ohms setting. If possible flex the wire while your monitoring the resistance value.

Could have a bad spot also make sure these connections are clean and tight.

I am still leaning towards starter...

Yesterday I went thru as best I could traced every wire between the battery-starter, battery-ground, and fuse bock-battery and no change but today I went to jusmp her to go run some errands and she would even fire and when she did it was a horrible miss fire rough idle and would die afetr a few seconds. .. I am really stumped now... I didn't do anything other then change battery and redo the grounds... all my fuses check out fine and she rotates fine... I am totally lost

If you do pull the starter, you can pop the back off the solenoid and look at the contacts. If they're really pitted and corroded, that could be it. there are rebuild kits for cheap, or you could clean it real well, if you don't think you are going to keep the engine long.

Yep that's the plan I'd rather save some cash and just rebuild it myself but this coold weather has been putting me on hold its been in the single digits here in CO... also would like to get here running right before waisting to much time on the starter... all these electrical issues really make me miss driving my 81 pick up she was so simple
