Help with liftgate!

I have a 1996 4Runner. Today, I shut the liftgate, and as I remember, It did not lock into place - rather, it bounced off the bottom and I had to shut it again. It worked the second time, but it no longer opens. The handle is squeezed to open the door; when you now go to squeeze the handle, it's already in the pulled position, not able to be squeezed any more. The door will not open, even under severe force. It will not go in any more when pushed as well.

Please, any help or advice? I just got this car today. I really don't need a trip to the shop.

Use the search function. I've never had this issue but other members have. It's not that uncommon.

Happened to me too. Had to pull the plastic cover off on the inside, unbolt the plate underneath so you have access to the latch linkage, then find out why it's not opening. I went to the junkyard and replaced the actuator. Cost me $35 and about an hour or two of my time.
