Help with Lower Ball Joints...

Hi everyone, so after the parts have been sitting in my garage for the past few weeks, I finally found the time to put on the ToyTec Ultimate Lift on sr5 today.

However, I can't seem to securely attach the lower ball joint. Here's a picture (left side is passenger, right side is driver):

The horizontal arm on the LBJ kinda wiggles up and down? Is this ok? If not, how do I get it to secure tightly? It seems like I get to a point in securing it and then it just keeps rotating, afraid I'll strip it if I keep going.

Also, is it supposed to be oozing out that gooey stuff like that? Is it leaking? If so, how do I fix it?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

it should not be oozing, might be time to replace those outer tie rod ends. Look the the top of that bolt, is there a hex key indentation? If so you can you a hex key and a wrench to snug them down. The hex key stops the joint from spinning so you can tighten it. If there is not indent you can you an impact wrench if you have access to one.
 
Did you hammer those out or use a puller?

I hammered mine out and it trashed one that then started oozing like yours and would spin.

I think you just need to replace them to call it safe.

So what exactly did you replace to solve the problem?

Do you think it safe to drive on for a mile or two to a shop for them to fix it?

A mile or two at low speeds. They are easy to replace. I would do it yourself. I also highly recommend OEM Toyota parts. Yes they are expensive but hey it'll last another 100k. When replacing them mark how far on the threads they are, that will give you a good start point and you should be able to drive to an alignment shop at the point.

Thanks for the info, I'm still under warranty so I'll be taking it to the dealership, live in a city do it'll be 25mpg all the way for about 1.5 miles

Will the warranty replace it if you tampered with it? Most of the time you have to have the stealership install the lift, maybe I am wrong?
 
I am unaware of any Dealership, Toyota or not that installs a lift kit. There are no "factory approved" lift kits so that would be an issue for the dealer from a liability and warranty standpoint. Then most just don't want to deal with aftermarket installations because it becomes more time consuming and cause too many issues compared to just sticking with what the factory tells you to do.

Crap, didnt think about that part. Doubt they'll cover me. Maybe I'll try to do it myself. Does anyone out there have a part # for the lower ball joints? And any idea exactly what I need to replace? Just LBJ? How about the boot?

I searched a bit on this site and haven't found anything definitive. Any help would be greatly appreciated
 
is the joint still tight?
put a jack underneath the joint. carefully, you dont want to bend the steering knuckle.
after youve got some pressure on it, the nut should tighten down.
 
the lbj is on the bottom. hence the lower...:naughty:

the nut pointing toward the ground, on the very bottom, thats the lower balljoint..
