so this weekend I thought I would just repair my starter real quick. there looks to be some sort of exhaust line blocking it from the wheel well. this is a five speed manual. I can't see the bolts that need to be removed. they look to be in a different spot than others and I'm not even sure how I can get to them. can anybody help me with pictures of this setup. its 1998

I just did the starter on my '97 with help from archived threads on this forum. Although mine is an automatic, the procedure should be the same with the exception of the filler tube on the auto tranny that I had to remove.

I did not remove any of the exhaust supports/flanges as stated in some of the "how to" threads.
Skinny, long arms would be an asset but it did come out through the inner fender access hole when I removed the brackets holding the brake lines.

You have to hold your tongue just right in your mouth to get it to fit however.
Good Luck

First thing I did was disconnected the neg battery post and put the truck up on stands and removed the front passenger wheel.

Open up the rubber flap that is located to the rear of the strut.

Go under and remove the large skid plate.

I then used 2 lights shining into the area. It's a tight space.

Remove the battery cable from the starter with a 3/8" drive ratchet, a 12mm socket and a 12" extension. Go in from the bottom.

There are 2 brackets holding a pair of brake lines visible from the wheel well.
Remove both of them . One bold is very easy to get to and the one on the inside of the frame...not so easy. I didn't have a shallow 12 mm socket and a ratchet wrench would work best from underneath the truck. On an automatic, the tranny filler tube gets in the way of the inside bolt making a ratchet very tight.

From underneath the truck have a 14 mm socket, a 3" extension, a universal joint , and a 12-14 " extension and put a breaker bar on that.

go in from the rear and get the 2 - 14 mm bolts that hold the starter on.
This is not easy but do-able. I would try to get the top bolt out first as it's the hardest to get at and with a little luck, after you crack it loose. you can reach up with your fingers and get it to turn while grasping just the 3" extension.

The starter should be free now with very tight wiggle room. Come back out from underneath and reach in the fender well hole where you loosened the brake line brackets and try to pull the starter out through the hole. It helps if you have someone else underneath to assist in the lifting and rotating of the starter. It came out bendix gear first and the battery contact stud about 2 o'clock position.

There are many good write-ups regarding replacing the contacts if you look.
Hope this helps. My gf learned a whole new vocabulary when I was doing it.

If I had access to a torch, I would have tried to remove the exhaust flange but I couldn't remove one of the bolts without twisting it off...which I didn't want to do.

thank you for the nice write up....I can't find the 14mm bolts that hold starter on? Are they part of the tranny case as well? Seems stupid to me that I can't tell what two bolts hold it on. Maybe if I look from underneath.

I think the mistake I was making in just getting started was not having the wheel off. I have only owned camrys...where do i jack this thing up at

This has nothing to do with the thread but is your user name apple-scrap or apples-crap?? Just interested in knowing for no good reason is all :D

Well...the bolts are about 3" long and go through the bell housing into the starter.
I had to get a couple of lights shining up in there to see the bolts and even then I worked on getting my socket on the wrong bolt for about an hour before I realized it was the wrong bolt. Easy to mistake but with that said, if I wanted to be a mechanic, I'd have taken it up in school.
I also have vision issues so I'll blame it on that.

The bolts were, looking from the bendix end at about 11 and 5 o'clock going through the bell housing into the starter. That darn exhaust manifold support bracket might be in the way of seeing them clearly.
Have patience and you will prevail.
