Help with switch wiring

I'm going to wire up some LED lights to OTRATTW switches on my 88 pickup. The switches have a backlight that I'd like to have light up when the lights are turned on. I thought I could tap into the wiring at the factory dimmer knob, but this doesn't seem to work as I would expect. There is a red/black (+) and white/black (-) wire. I've tried connecting only the positive (and grounding to the body) and also both wires, and in both cases the switch light dims opposite of the dash lights. It's on when the headlights are on, but the dimming doesn't work correctly. Is there somewhere else I should be tapping into for the switch lighting, or something I'm doing wrong?

The dimmer switch is on the negative side, which is why it doesn't work for you.
Just tap into the wire for any of the dash back lights.
There's also a fuse in the kick panel fuse box that will work. It's only hot when the headlights are on.

I've wired the same switch on a 4th gen and ran into the same issue. It dims on the negative side, and to get it to dim properly I had to connect both positive and negative to the factory dimmer. I expected the same to work on the truck, but it doesn't.

Either way, I pulled up a fuse panel diagram (I don't have the cover), and found the tail light fuse. I can tap this to get power to the switch, I'm not overly concerned about them dimming so this should work. Thanks for the tip!
