Help with wheel bearing info

Just got a 1st gen and while driving it home the vehicle was shaking around 50-70 mph. I got the wheels balanced and that helped a lot, but there is still a good shake around that speed. The guy who did my wheel balancing said that my tire had play up and down also left to right thus most likely meaning i need a new wheel bearing and inner tierod. Question is can i just change the whole hub (the part i switch from 2x4 to 4x4) instead of the bearings to a manual lockimg hub or is that different. Also does the hysteer come with an inner tierod? Id rather do the work once then replace the tie rod then do it again for the hysteer

If you're talking high steer I assume you have a solid axle? You only have one tie rod :), and only one set of tie rod ends. If you convert to high steer, you'll lose the j arm and gain a drag link, and your tie rod ends will probably change to FJ80 ends instead of your factory ends. Your hubs won't change, and replacing them is no way to replace your wheel bearings. That'd be like getting new wheels because you need new tires.

Tie rod ends are cheap. Just replace the factory ones while you do more research on the swap to crossover steering, because it sounds like maybe you're not quite up to speed on that yet?

you are right i am not up to speed yet. i have IFS it is a 87. is there a specific part in this forum i can find just 1st gen info

Youre on it.

Your IFS is already "high steer"

But before you go replacing parts, jack the truck up and see whats loose for yourself. There are a lot of moving parts in the IFS steering. Could also be ball joints instead of wheel bearings.

Ok, yeah, then talk of inner and outer tie rod ends applies. Forget the high steer, that's a solid axle thing. You still don't want to change the hubs to replace the bearings though. :)

If you have automatic hubs, you can definitely swap to manual hubs. If you do, you'll be most of the way to changing the bearings anyway. It's not a hard job, but it is messy (lots of grease) - you'll need a ft/lb torque wrench, a 54mm socket, and something to seat the wheel bearing seal on the back of the rotor/hub assembly, I used a big brass drift and went really really slow :D. Changing tie rod ends is easy if it's not all fused with rust - I'd do the outers at the same time, and check the pitman and idler arms while you're under there. When you're done it'll drive like a new truck.
