Help with YouTube uploads

Hey all you techies, I'm having a heck of a time getting a video to load on YouTube so I can post the results on the forum. I made/edited the video using Windows Live Essentials, and saved it to my computer using their "recommended" setting (WMV, it appears). I log on to YouTube, click on "upload", browse for my video, click on it, and the upload begins just fine. The only problem is the speed, or rather lack thereof--after quite a few minutes (like about 10), the progress bar jumps to...1%. It tells me I have about 561 minutes remaining!

I have an i7 computer, Windows 7 64 bit, Internet Explorer 9, Verizon Wireless Broadband internet connection. My internet speed isn't great, but it shouldn't be THAT bad. The video is about 8.5 minutes of HD from a GoPro camera. Any ideas what I can do to speed this up without completely changing all the settings on my computer or adding a bunch of new software? I'm no computer geek, so keep it in laymen's terms, please (LOL). Thanks for any assistance!

I use sony PMB program to manage pictures and videos. I can upload directly to youtube or photobucket etc. and it is way faster than using the site. Might be the actual size it made the video when you edited it. 8.5min of HD plus converting it to .wmv might have made it even bigger. Right click the file and click properties to see how big the file is.Or just highlight it in windows file viewer.

Man, you weren't kidding--1.37 GB! Imagine if I had tried the original recording, at about 34 minutes! So, do I need to go back to Windows Live Essentials and save to something other than .wmv? Do I need to download this Sony program, like an alternate to Windows Media Viewer, and then save the video in that format? Anything I shoot with the GoPro is going to be a huge file, so I'm going to run into this same problem. Is the Sony program a software package I need to purchase?

The sony software is free. It comes with all their camera's.

Use the software to open the video then use the public share option and upload it to youtube. It will give you a video conversion option to downsize the video automatically. You can use it to upload the full hd one as well it will just take a night to do.

Something is wrong there, Bucknut. It may be that the upload estimator isn't accurate right off the bat, it's not uncommon to see it revise its estimate several times over the course of an upload. Let it run for a bit, and see what happens.

For comparison, that Devils Racetrack footage of mine is 3 minutes of 720p in a .wmv format, and that took maybe 10 minutes to upload on a basic cable connection. [This video is 10 minutes of 720p, and took about half an hour I think?

Thanks, Kid--I may try uploading before going out for some time, letting it tinker while I'm gone, to see if it will speed up. And Nate, I saved the software into my files, but when I try to run it, it wants a Sony camera plugged in first--not sure how to get around that one. I don't know enough about computers to work around things like that--I can follow instructions, but I don't know alternate ways to do things. I will keep trying, because I intend to start making those GoPro vids every time I go out (at least for the wilder runs, anyway).

Okay, I started the upload of my vid before going to work today at 5:30 AM, and when I got home early around 2:30 PM, instead of saying it was "uploading", the site said it was now "processing" my video, and was stuck at 0%. I dunno. I sure would like to post this vid before it's ancient history, AND not have to fight this every future time.
