Help!!!

I`m hopeing someone might be able to help me out with an issue I`ve recently started having with my 96 4runner. When I come to a stop at a light the rpms will drop as expected to adile. But after a min the rpms will jump and it seems like the engine revs a little, and wants to surge foreward. I`ve had it to 2 mechanics including a dealership. But since it doesn`t happen all the time, and of course not while a mechanic is in it they were no help. But I know somethings not right. Any ideas would be appreciated!

Do you have your A/C turned on? If so, the idle will kick up several hundred RPM when the A/C compressor clutch engages. It takes power to turn the compressor, so the ECU compensates by bumping-up the idle speed.

That`s the thing, it used to do it just when the ac was on. But lately it`s been doing it with out. Seems to be happening longer the last couple times also. Used to be just a quick surge foreward. but now it like revs through the duration of the light. If I take my foot off the break it would go. It started right around the time it got hot here in phx and I started using the ac. but like I said it`s when the ac is off. So I`m wondering if it has something to do with the engine working so hard the times the ac is on.

Another possibility is if you have your climate control set to defrost, the A/C compressor will kick on to dry the air. Which will bump-up the idle speed too.

mine would do this exact issue along with slight slipping at highway speeds once in a while.. it was the TPS, i would consider replacing that - do you have any codes? you could also try the usual and clean the throttle body etc and do a tune up

Thanks for the input guys! I`m gonna try all the above. I was worried it was a tranny, or something more serious.
