I am new to this have purchased 1994 4runner v6. Valve covers were leaking so we replaced them. When we took the driver's side valve cover off there was a piece of metal loose inside cover. Could that make the check engine light to come on and give a 52 code? Any help would make my day I hope I didn't buy a piece of crap. Thanks in advance

The photo I sent

This is what was inside the driver's side valve cover when we replaced leaking gaskets. Does anyone know what it is and would it cause the 52 code to come up? Please help I don't want to put it back together until I find out what this is

Maybe some type of baffle that should be affixed to the underside of the valve cover? Some valve covers have baffles where you would have an oil fill cap or other access port for engine emissions. The code 52 is for the knock sensor.

I could't really see how this could cause a knock sense code, but I could be missing something. I haven't torn apart a 3VZE in many years, but I would tend to agree with beaver, it could be a baffle of sorts. Perhaps post a pic of the valve cover inside?

i also would agree that is would appear to be some sorta of baffle piece. the real question is how in h3ll did it tear like this. If something was hitting it it could fool the ecu into believing there was a false knock. I have seen several post on knock sensor issue related to continuity problems though.

Is that the side with the oil cap? It's been awhile since I had that engine, but I believe they had a baffle at the fill location.

Probably just a baffle. When I resealed my valve covers on my 92, the right side was a little loose, and by the time I changed the PCV, it was completely separate from the valve cover. It will just sit in over the valvetrain when you put it back together. That shouldn't cause a knock problem.
