Hey guys, I am new to this forum and I got a 2008 4runner SR5 last year from my parents. Anyway i tried offroading in y 4runner for the first time, it was awesome. Could you still offroad and mud and maybe trail with a two wheel drive? Is there a way to get a 4wheel drive in there. I asked my dad and he doesn't want the 4wheel drive but I do./ Any suggestions and thanks!

Hello and welcome to T4R :)

I've seen some people off-road/trail with their 2WD 4Runners, but mostly on easy trails. On some harder ones, I'd imagine you'd be getting stuck quite often.

Not sure about the swapping to a 4WD transmission though.

yes you can wheel a 2wd, but like James said, easy trails...

turning a 2wd vehicle into a 4wd is a huge PIA. I know a few that have done it on a 3rd gen, nothing but headaches, its better, eaiser and cheaper to just sell the 2wd, and buy a 4wd...

Thanks guys I'm trying to get my mom to talk my dad in it. It close to my birthday soon. Anyway, any problems with the four wheel drive and in the long run? My dad says it has problems.

Trade it in for a 4WD, same year and color. Your dad prolly wouldn't notice. And don't listen to him when it comes to 4WDs. :guitar2:

Wow, when I was starting out I saved up my summer job money to buy a '73 Datsun pickup...now parents are buying their kids 25k rigs?...

Just don't go by yourself and you'll be fine...

Hey Larry77, Its not mine yet, but my parents got it for me because later on it will be mine. I just drive it. It is still titled to their name because insurance would have been so high for me. Also, I didn't get my liscense till my senior year and I am currently one. He is a nurse and has seen so many accidents in his time so he waited. I thank him for it. Its really for the family then once I finish college its mine. Nice trucks to most of the guys on this threa!

The 4th gen has one of the best Most versatile 4wd systems around, don't worryabout it.

I mean it just depends on what you do depends on what problems you run into. Im not really sure what you mean when you say how long will the 4wd last? I wont just go out.

Check out member Bala de Plata's 2WD 4Runner for potential.

The 4WD doesn't have much problems, but there are some that a 2WD will never have to deal with such as CV joints or boots. There is also two fewer diffs to flush for maintenance. If properly maintained the system should last the life of the vehicle.

I thought about getting a 2WD 4Runner, but because I wanted to play in the snow and for those three months in a year 4WD is worth it IMO.

Thanks guys for all the advice! I just hope my dad will see the light and also my mom to convince him. I went offroading the first time today and I am HOOKED on it! What is the difference between the 4h and 4l on 4wd? Also, is there any do's and don't that you recommend when I do get a 4wd? Thanks again! Okay I just got back from a test of my 2wd. I went on an incline and going up I put it into low and the tires just kept spinning. Then I went into D and still spun. I thought I was stuck down there. Anyway, I backed up and just drove as fast up that incline. I got out! Thank god! Would 4 wheel drive get me out of that more easily?
