Will start by saying we don't have a 4 Runner sitting in the driveway.... yet. We are in the process of switching some of our cars up and have our sights on a few 2nd gen, manual, T4R's.
About a decade ago I had a first gen (86) that I most likely would have kept were it not a manual. Guess I could have swapped it.....
Some on the forum might recognize the name if you're on other forums.... I've been around the (Toyota) block quite a while.... I have quite a bit of experience with 80's and 90's Toyotas. Before kids I was also a big part of our local car club and have several years of Auto-x'ing under my belt (including things like event chair, course design, driving instructor, etc).
Current stable is:
1970 FJ40 that's been one of the longest owned and least driven vehicle (always working on it, never have time to work on it)... attached picture. 350/TH350 running on TBI controlled by Megasquirt II with rPI tuning it.
2001 Lexus LX470 (100 series landcruiser)
2017 Prius V.... probably won't be with us much longer (will follow up later on this)
Past vehicles include:
Somewhere between 11 and 13 first gen MR2's.... a few notable ones:
1987 Hardtop, bought with window'd block. It got a JDM 4agze (late, smallport, 10psi supercharged 1.6L) and an E51 (USDM supercharged manual trans) swapped in and was running on Megasquirt I. That I know it was the first 4agze that retained the S/C to run on Megasquirt. This was circa 2004'ish. That was an awesome auto-x car.
1987 T-Top.... it received a modified AE92 GTS transmission and a built smallport 7AGE. This is when you take a 7AFE block (1.8L), install 4age pistons on the 7a rods, then bolt on a 4age head (twin cam vs DOHC... no, they aren't the same in the Toyota world). This was was essentially a stroked 11.3:1 engine. It was fun, until it spun a bearing (machine shop did poor work). I built the same engine for a corolla years later and had no issues when I used a good machine shop to turn the crank and rods.
1986 sunroof.... it was just beat the F up by my ex's father at auto-x's.... he would drive the entire course in first gear at 7,000 rpm, his times were really slow too. After 4 months and 4 engines I said 'enough is enough'. I swapped in a 1991 5sfe/S54 from a 2nd gen MR2. It was installed over the course of, I believe, 2 weekends. Friend helped fabricating the mounts, but other than that - it was pretty straight forward. Engine/trans placement was easy, mounts were fabricated to bolt into the factory locations, and then I wired it so that the entire body harness was untouched. I took the 4age 'connector' and spliced those to the engine (generally, for whatever reason, most people go the other way, which I don't understand). Meaning someone could feasibly unbolt the 5sfe/s54 and bolt in a 4age/c5x without any issues or wiring changes.
Some other vehicles:
1976 FJ40 (bought same day as the 1970, this was bought for parts, then resold to someone else for parts)
1993 3x locked FZJ80
1988 Toyota Corolla Alltrac wagon (oddly weird/rare vehicle)
1985 Toyota Corolla SR5 "AE86" /MT swapped
1990 Toyota Corolla SR5, 4age smallport swapped and modified the 4afe ecu/wiring to run it (and run up to 7800 rpms)
1990 Geo Prizm GSI (another odd/rare vehicle, basically a 4 door corolla GTS)
1997 Camry
1993 Tercel
I'm sure there's more I'm missing.... as such, I'm on several other Toyota or vehicle specific forums as well....
