I would not recommend HID's in the stock housing. The light quality is not that great, and you will blind on-coming traffic. Do a search for "projector retrofit" and you will see what I mean. I put one of those HID kits in my motorcycle, and all it did was light up the tops of trees and street signs, which was really annoying. If you don't want to do the projector retrofit, I suggest some Sylvania Silverstar bulbs. Super bright and plenty of light.

If the hids dont work, then most deff! but 66$ shipped for a hid kit was easier than 70 for piaa lights. We'll see i guess, im getting mixed reviews

I put a Zentec HID 5000K kit in my 99 Limited 4Runner 4x4. They are HID low beam, Halgoen hi beam bulbs, but they work awesome.

The 8000k HIDs are too much purple in color and not as bright IMO.

DDM Tuning

I recommend http://ddmtuning.com/. I heard nothing but great things about this kit from this forum. I ordered headlight and fog light kit for my friend's grand prix and they work great. They also warm up real quick. Plus, they have a lifetime warranty. Both 5000k came out to $95 and took about 2 weeks to get.

I got the ddm hi/low 5000K! Im glad you the ddm kit, that seemed like the best way to go! I cant see them being a problem if they are adjusted correctly!

I've got some H4 4300k HID's in my aftermarket stock style housing, and have not had any complaints since installing them over a month ago...

The projector retrofit is usually recommended, but I find they can look a little like eyeballs, without some accent lighting installed in the housing as well.

As far as light color and brightness, I find the 4300k to be a nice addition, and even look killer during the day!

Good luck on your search and eventual decision! :)

Fightman, i ordered the ddm kit! I agree with what you said about retrofits, it looks very obsence and out of place in my opinion. But i hear good things from the people that have hids!

Maybe I am biased, but I completely dissagree with anyone that says the light output from HID's in a stock housing is good. For the money you would spend on a DDM HID kit, you could buy some PIAA extreme halogen bulbs which would yield better output in a halogen housing. I'm not trying to bash anyone here, just trying to state the facts and not let people's opinion falsify the actual results. (And, I totally am biased! HA)

Here is photo proof of how terrible drop-in HID's are in our 4Runner housings:
