Highest Mileage 4th Gen?

I puchased my 03 4runner at 220,000. It now has 393,000 and still going strong.
Does have some issues. The exhaust manifolds leak and it makes the ticking noise like bad valves would make.
My question for anyone right now is bleeding the front brakes. I did the rear brakes by tuning on the key letting the pump come up to pressure, pumping the heck out of it and holding it to the floor and opening the bleeder valve. That was successful. Is it the same for the fronts? I cant find anything about that.
Thank you...

Personally, I used ChrisFix's one-man method, although I used two people to make things go even faster/easier.

You're apparently supposed to keep the key on the entire time so that the ABS pump keeps things pressurized. But for the fronts, just pump and hold the pedal, crack the bleeder screw, close it, repeat.

When you finish them all - turn the key off, pump the brake pedal 40 times (not kidding). Turn the key to on, pump it 20-ish times. You should hear the ABS pump come on. Turn the key off, pump the pedal again till it gets super firm (probably close to 40 times again). My brakes had felt super mushy even after bleeding and this last procedure with the pumping made them feel soooo much better.

One year to the day after crossing 300,000 miles, I'm now at 322,647.

Nothing out of the ordinary maintenance-wise the past 12 months: oil changes, air filters, tire rotations, headlight bulbs, new battery, and driver's side DRL/blinker socket and bulb.

Here's the most recent oil analysis, just for kicks:

Not much to brag about compared to some of the others here, but I just hit 200k a couple weeks ago on my 05’ V6.

Plan on seeing another 100k in it.

For all of you with a high mileage 4Runner, would are your thoughts on purchasing one with 295k on it? I know these things last forever, but at some point things will start needing replaced. It is a 2004 with v8 and single owner at a good price.

I sold my 2006 4Runner two years ago, and I've always regretted it... so I'm shopping now. It had 200k on it and was still running great. :ybrick:

I have an 03 sport with 328,004 on the clock. I had a flashing checking and shaking the other day, so I am trading it in for an 04 with 96,758. They are both v8 4wd sport editions, in my opinion the 4th gen 4runners are the best vehicles ever made!

Keep it yota

Ticking????

Yeah my Runner has 130K and there's ticking noise when idle so it that the exhaust manifold issue?

Easiest way to tell imo is driving next to walls and slowly give it gas so it has a load on the engine, you'll hear it instantly.

05 v8 just rolled over 197k

My daughter just purchased one. It has 156k miles on it and just found out it may have an exhaust leak manifold issue or heat shield may need fixing. Wont know until this Friday when they get under it. We also found out that it has a wiring bypass for some common ac issue. So it results in lower air pressure to the vehicle occupants even on full blast. It also may need a starter? No issue yet but my daughter heard some weird noise And delay when starting thebkther day. It almost feels like driving a used vehicle off the lot and it malfunctioning right away. Just don’t know if we should fix basic stuff now then sell or if this is normal for year make and mileage. Anyhow my question is this a bad year or model for the 4Runner? It seemed to b taken care of but my Toyota experience is limited. My husband had a Tacoma we bought with 130k miles. Ran hard every day til 190k miles. Zero issue. He got in an accident. Only reason we don’t still have it. Only major thing was cv joints. Just did basic maintenance. Anyhow this was a 1.5hr distance purchase and just not sure if this is normal ware and tare. Help. It’s my daughters first vehicle. She used all of her money.

I know I've encountered the Heat Shield coming lose on 2 different occasions. The bolts and nuts holding them tight were rusted out so there was a constant knocking or metal hitting metal rattling, that was an easy fix. My faint ticking from the engine while being idle is something I'll need to keep an ear out for. I've had some leaking in the cv boot and my front brake calipers seized. I've owned it since 70K and that's what I've had to replace. From what I've researched my 08' should run pass 300K miles but obviously things will get worn and need replacing. But the expecting my engine, tranny, transfer case to be strong and long lasting.

HA!
I can't remember if I posted on this thread or not.
(and I aint going thru all 75 pages to find out)

2004 SR5 V6...
had 195k when I bought it in 2015....
just passed 266,000!

Yeah, I had a dustshield rattle...I removed it and now it doesn't rattle anymore! :D

These engines also just like to tick. You can read up on it on here if you'd like, but it's not normally something that needs to be worried about. IIRC the V8 was the one that had exhaust manifold issues.

Looking for a 4gen 2004. used im seeing alot for sale with a lot of miles on it, what have you done to your car maintenance wise with all these miles?
The biggest issues with these seems to be seizing brake calipers. Some early 4th gen V6's (pre-'05) had headgasket issues.

Mine's at 185k and the list of replaced parts (apart from things like brake pads, spark plugs, and tires) is:
  • Balljoints (I just replaced all front control arms for the sake of having everything new and to get adjustable uppers for my lift)
  • FR wheel bearing
  • FL RL brake calipers
  • Radiator
  • CV axles
  • Shocks (I debate whether or not they were actually bad, cuz they weren't leaking and felt fine. But a shop failed them during inspection so I had no choice but to replace)

Not bad for a truck with that many miles. I'm sure most of those items wouldn't have failed yet, either, if I didn't beat the hell out of it offroad.

291,000 and change in my 06 V8 Limited, still going strong - bought from the original owner in AZ (rust free) with all records - only 2 timing services thus far.

Assuming the other services were done at 90 and 180k miles, I'd do another timing belt job if I were you. That's not something you wanna let go longer than you should.
