Hey all,
New guy having been a jeep guy in past years looking at a 2006 4runner with 170K and wondered if there are any issues with transmissions and at what mileage point do they crop up? It's and auto, looks to be well taken care of and not much rust on the body, haven't seen frame / floor boards yet. Thanks in advance for any comments.
Regards,

Welcome! There are a few issues that 4Runners run into, but if those aren't present, it's gonna be a ridiculously solid vehicle (see the post a page or two back where the guy with 800k+ miles is on original engine and trans with basically just regular maintenance).
All of them have seizing brake caliper issues. My recommendation (since it's an easy job) is to get a caliper with a lifetime warranty from an autoparts store and just take it off and replace for free (plus your own labor) if it seizes again.
Early (03-04) V6's had some headgasket issues. Your '06 should be fine if it's a V6.
Only the V8's have a timing belt that needs changing. The V6 engine is basically bulletproof and needs very little besides regular maintenance (oil changes/air filters, the usual).
Definitely look at the frame for rust. They're pretty prone to it and it's hard to stop once it starts.
Some V8's had headers that'd crack, which was covered under warranty for a while. Something to check for, if you're looking at a V8.
As far as I know, those are the common issues to look for. If they're not present, you're good to go to whatever mileage you choose. From what I've seen, most people get rid of their 4th gens because they want to upgrade to a 5th gen, or because they're totaled. Rarely do they get rid of them because of engine/trans problems, or other large work that needs to be done.
