highspeed lbj failure?

04rnr had his go out while going around a highway loop on ramp at about 45 mph. It totaled his awesome 3rd gen. Luckily it didn't roll.
 
is it just me or do they all seem to snap from low speed turns?

Considering what I read about the way the ball joints fail when moving (during researching my problem), a high speed failure (think highway speeds) would almost inevitably end in rolling the T4R. I don't have any experience with this (nor did I find any cases of high speed lbj failure), but I have driven 12 passenger vans all of my life and my T4R feels exactly the same; and those vans are known for having high centers of gravity.

Be very glad they've all been low speed failures.

I have 100k on my LBJ and have some OEM ones waiting to be put on. This picture alone makes me want to do it every 100k. Its really not that much money considering what could happen if they break.
 
makes me wonder about why they haven't recalled anything, makes me also consider a cage and 5 point harnesses with a hans device.... just kidding
 
I guess Tacomas are the only one that don't really have the problems since they have the beefier lbjs and tie rods.

This is my understanding....

They aren't any beefier where it counts and Tacoma's LBJs fail as well. They use the same size bolts and ball joint which is why they just bolt right up to thr 4runner spindle and lower control arm. The casting is beefier and use a larger OTRE but that isn't the part that typically fails.
 
Yep, It's not the bolts that are failing. it's the bj's..

Many fail because of bolt shear.

All 4 of my bolts sheared from the spindle, the balljoint was just about brand new, but the bolts were re-tourqued multiple times
