I can't believe this this is rated for 22mpg highway and you guys are getting 22mpg max. My 99' is rated for 17mpg highway and i easily turn 21mpg...
Your 4runner is rated 19mpg highway (EPA)
And even us can do well over 22mpg easily, on flat roads, warm and dry temperature, and doing 55-60 mph. We are talking about realistic mpg here.
What i want to know, is 24mpg possible out of a 5th gen for regular highway commuting to work and back? Or is 24 only achievable on road trips.
No. Seriously, if you want that kind of efficiency get a CUV, not a 4,600 lb BOF brick. I have averaged overall in 75K+ miles 19.98 mpg. That's two different 5th gen 4Runners combined. I usually get between 20-22 mpg on interstate and 15-17 around town. I only get 23-24 mpg in rare situations such as long road trips on flat ground in the summer with the vehicle only lightly loaded. When I say flat I am talking about midwest or south flat. If anyone else tells you you can get 24 regularly commuting in a 4WD 4Runner they are lying. Winter time I get about 10-20% less efficiency.
You don't buy this vehicle for the gas mileage.
CUV's don't have the toughness and reliability, hauling capacity, towing capacity of the 4runner. My 89 and now 99 have both been tanks. Super reliable, easy to work on, etc. It's just confusing that in 25 years there have not been any increases in MPG (Yes, i understand the MPG stayed the same, but the HP / Torque has improved greatly). I don't just highway commute, tho i do it every day.
Thanks for the tips, looks like it returns slightly better than my trucks.
