yea reclining rear seats is a plus. Im going to look for a seat and see if i can swap the brackets to my leather seats.

I'm gearing up to modify some USDM rear seat back frames to accept the adjustable JDM seat back latches (of course Toyota couldn't use the same seat back for both markets...). I put a few picks of the latches in one of my threads floating around here if you want to see the differences.

I have to wonder if there are some US safety regulations that force that feature to be deleted?

Yeah, that and cost. Tariffs on vehicles exported from Japan are high, which really cuts into Toyota's margins. If they brought over all those goodies, 4Runners would have been $4-5,000 more, probably.

I noticed that the switches and switch blanks are in a different configuration on the outside of the steering wheel (far right on RHD, far left on LHD).

I was in Japan last fall and I stumbled across a couple of Hilux Surfs - but all I found were later "facelift" models equivalent to the 01-02 4Runners.

Pardon the terrible photos. I shot these from a shuttle bus I was in. Never came across one while I was walking on my own in Tokyo.

From some angles, I think that facelift front valence looks good:

From others, such as the photo you posted, they look kind of hideous!
