Hilux- Surf JDM options/parts/SSR-G/SSR-X: Post info

A small, albeit desirable difference for me would be the "correctly oriented" rear window switch after doing a 99+ console swap. :)

yea reclining rear seats is a plus. Im going to look for a seat and see if i can swap the brackets to my leather seats.

Dream list:
Rear hatch and spoiler + swing arm
reclining seat
Meter thingy

I'm gearing up to modify some USDM rear seat back frames to accept the adjustable JDM seat back latches (of course Toyota couldn't use the same seat back for both markets...). I put a few picks of the latches in one of my threads floating around here if you want to see the differences.

I'm interested in that high idle switch... I would bet the feature exists in ours, but is just un-wired. Anyone know of an FSM of a JDM 4runner???

I have to wonder if there are some US safety regulations that force that feature to be deleted?

Yeah, that and cost. Tariffs on vehicles exported from Japan are high, which really cuts into Toyota's margins. If they brought over all those goodies, 4Runners would have been $4-5,000 more, probably.

I noticed that the switches and switch blanks are in a different configuration on the outside of the steering wheel (far right on RHD, far left on LHD).

I was in Japan last fall and I stumbled across a couple of Hilux Surfs - but all I found were later "facelift" models equivalent to the 01-02 4Runners.

Pardon the terrible photos. I shot these from a shuttle bus I was in. Never came across one while I was walking on my own in Tokyo.

From some angles, I think that facelift front valence looks good:

From others, such as the photo you posted, they look kind of hideous!

So I come from the import world
Owned a couple toyotas, lexus, hondas, acuras, nissans and blah blah

I love some jdm optional items and upgrades and want to start a list of things I can buy or search for so Im looking for a little input from the forum.

What are the differences or options that came with the jdm version of the 3rd gen?

It's a diesel specific thing from memory.

Also worth noting thet SSR-X Limited also has many of the extras, not just the SSR-G

There are different front bumper styles too, and the scoop on the front is functional, and only on the diesels. there was also a factory carbon fibre effect trim, (pics in my build thread)

Don't forget also...

  • There are two types of spoiler, not all had the mirror
  • Facelift fender mirrors were different, and had a second mirror so you can see down the front of the bumper
  • There were two styles for field montor, the one pictured and a more tech heavy GPS based one
  • From 96 the multi mode 2wd/awd/4wd transfer box was an option.
  • The radio antenna is on the other side.
  • Side repeater (indicators)
  • Very Very few are Leather
  • From the parts diagram there were factory TV antennas, so I assume there was a factory TV option
  • There was a modular factory nudge bar that had at least 4 versions from a simple nudge bar, A bar, full headlight wrap arounds, or a wierd lower nudge bar wraparound.
  • There were some even more bizzare padding options for the "fat lip" bumper style

No nut chiller vent

And the steering wheel is on the correct side ;)

Alterntive front bumper, - some had vents sme had fog lights
