Hilux- Surf JDM options/parts/SSR-G/SSR-X: Post info

So I come from the import world
Owned a couple toyotas, lexus, hondas, acuras, nissans and blah blah

I love some jdm optional items and upgrades and want to start a list of things I can buy or search for so Im looking for a little input from the forum.


What are the differences or options that came with the jdm version of the 3rd gen?

JDM Field Monitor Unit - Interior

Interior: Field Monitor (as above), kickpanel mounted road flare (RHD passenger side), floormats, rear reclining seatbacks, clock and vents on center dash trim are reversed

Motor:1kz-te 3.0L turbo diesel!, multi-mode transfer case right from '96+, optional LSD rear diff

Chassis: electronic adjustable struts (normal/hard), dual batteries (winter package)

Exterior: clear corners, fender lights for turn signals, power folding mirrors, rear spoiler with retractable backup mirror (SSR-G trim), bull bar, plastic bumpers, different spacing on roof racks, rear swing out spare tire carrier w/ different tailgate, Surf specific taillights


Electronics: high idle switch

Rear mirror is mounted in the rear spoiler, there's a switch that drops it down so you can look in the rear view mirror and see your back bumper/hitch when you're backing up.

My truck has a dot-matrix style sunshade thing instead of tint that says "Hilux Surf" on it on the rear glass, but I haven't seen any others like that, it has to be a dealer accesory kind of thing.

Looking at these pics got me thinking of a few other things I missed earlier:
-fender mirror
-window visors (dealer add-on)
-Surf specific cladding and fender flares
-analogue auto climate control
-diesel specific tach

It appears that all the Surf's came with triple din center dash pieces (for the radio) as opposed to 4Runner's with double din.

And here's the rear seat back reclined much further than it's USDM counterpart. IIRC, they have 3 setting notches.

Did only the second gen come with a recaro interior or did the 3rd gen also?

My friend has an SSR-X in the Philippines straight from Japan and its just a beast. I was surprised that they did not include those goodies on the USDM models

It just makes no sense why they would not include some of those options on the USDM 4Runners. I know my friends would appreciate those reclining rear seats on long trips.

yea reclining rear seats is a plus. Im going to look for a seat and see if i can swap the brackets to my leather seats.

Rear hatch and spoiler + swing arm
reclining seat
Meter thingy

I have to wonder if there are some US safety regulations that force that feature to be deleted?

Did they have a factory optional 3rd row bench seat like my Argentine-assembled Brazilian market HiLux SW4? I so wanted one for my US truck.
