Hitch Cargo Carrier

I picked up a hitch cargo carrier that is rated to 500 lbs over the weekend, and it worked out great. I used it to pick up 12 bags of mulch for the yard. The thing is built tough, and I can see it serving many purposes in the future. For $150, it was a great buy!

Oh yeah, I also picked up a nice cargo net to secure anything and everything to the rack. I'm considering picking up a large cargo bag for it too.

I got a kick-ass one from the local Harbor Freight and Tool for $50. It holds 500 lbs, but does not have the cool mesh floor yours has, just an aluminum frame. I'll post pics later. They ROCK! I use mine to haul coolers and camping supplies that don't mind getting a little wet or dirty on the road. Saves lots of room in the cab and stuff.

That's a great idea for transporting mulch, etc... I'd also like to know where you purchased it and the cargo net. I could use something like that for transporting my wife's gardening stuff.
 
I picked it up locally at a truck supply shop. I'll post some cell phone pics of her all loaded up tonight.

I see a lot of them when I go on long trips. I like them because the stuff is behind the car and not on top. It cuts down wind resistance.

Of course you could use both the roof and back, but who would do that?

I find myself looking for more reasons to use it. Anyone have any ideas? Can I strap the mother-in-law to it?

It would be a great idea if you very cheapy, easy to break bungy cords.:D

Yes they are nice for SUV owners, I have been using mine for 10 years now, hitch haul brand, with side rails and cargo net. Here is a photo from our ice fishing trip this winter. I also use mine for

1. Hunting gear (tree stands, etc)
2. Deer (see item 1 if I got a deer).
3. Hauling gas cans to fill up at the gas station for lawn mower, snowblower etc.
4. Camping, coolers.
5. Christmas tree.
6. FIBs if they are driving to close.

After 10 years of this one I just gave it to a friend and ordered one of these.

The idea of driving behind a SUV with a dead deer attached to the back does not sound appealing.

This Saturday I am taking my Son down to Valdosta State College, a bunch of high school kids are invited go down there for the summer. We have a small refrigerater, TV, clothes for 6 weeks and tons of other stuff. I am sure I will use the hitch packer in the back and my new Costco / Coleman roof rack AND I still wonder if I will be able to make it all fit.

I may be looking like the Beverly Hillbillies when I go down I-75.:D

When I got my Hitch Haul brand model years ago, it came as one solid unit with welds, when I looked at the newer ones from Hitch Haul (Cabelas) they needed assembly to get them together. I realize that the main bucket area will have some welds. But when I read some curent reviews a few people mentioned the bolt together parts were the weak points. I am always standing on my hitch carrier to get to items on the top of the truck so over the years the sides have bent down.
I saw one of the hitch witch units on a truck this spring so I did some research and I read some good reviews on how solid the Hitch Witches are. They apparently stay perfectly seated and are not affected by uneven loads. Plus the load capacity is 500-1000lbs depending on class of hitch. They are also galvanized for rust free use. The hitch haul rusted, but I never had a problem with it, I would just clean it every year and apply a new coat of paint.
So overall I thought I would just try a unit that was labeled as more solid and was rust free. I just ordered it this week so I do not have any feedback on the actual use so it remains to be seen how it will actually perform.

and just an fyi, the website for them isn't working very well, they have an ebay store or just call them.

benk777, I have one that is very similar...I've used it for deer and christmas trees. Mine is the foldup version.

Iron Clad what brand is that fold up that you have? Had a good experience with it?

I'd really like to snag one of those.
