Hitch Locks, What do you use?

So I wanted to see if anyone had suggestions on a lock to go with.



im in IL so salt is a factor.

I did come across;

which is supposed to be able to release with toyota key. But it is huge, and my concern is locking up a rare vanity hitch cover.


What caught your eyes or have you had success with?

I have had a Masterlock pin on this truck and my previous truck for over 10 years. It has been outside on the hitch the whole time. The lock is a little sticky now but still functions fine. A little graphite would probably make it work like new.

After trying about four different types over the years, and having each one fail because of rust issues, I no longer use one. When a trailer is hooked up, I am not worried, because I am usually driving. And, when I unhook the trailer, I pull the standard pin and clip and put the ball mount in the rear storage area. This way it can't be stolen, and I won't whack my shin on it when I walk behind the truck. :ybrick:

What caught your eyes or have you had success with?

Salt is not a factor here in TX but that one looks very similar to mine but I bought it at a trailer store. I like it a lot and have had no problems with it. I have a Smittybilt beaver step that stays on the truck unless I am pulling a trailer (6-10 times/year) and the lock makes sure that step stays with me.

It's not that big. I own one. And I love it. Less keys on my key ring. And my Toyota key works ! But you can only set it up ONE TIME for ONE KEY. Good luck picking that lock by the way! You can see how big it is at pep boys. They usually have it in stock. However you need one that says specifically for Toyota/Nissan

I like having a hitch reciever because it can be a quick recovery point.

I have the Bolt one also and like it for the reasons mentioned here, no additional key. I have padlocks also keyed to my Toyota key. Just take it off occasionally and spray some Tri-Lube or other lubricant in there. You can't just put any of these on and leave/neglect forever or you will be cutting them off in the future.

I use a 5/8" bolt & a locking nut ( stainless ) requires wrenches for removal.
Anything can be stolen, all you can do is make it difficult.

Trailer Receiver Locks

Have used it year-round up here (Canadian winters = lots of road salt) with no corrosion issues. Used it to secure my previous Go Rhino hitch step on my 03 Limited. It now secures my Smittybilt beaver step on my 2011 Limited.

The rubber/plastic cover protects the keyhole from the elements, and regular lubrication keeps the cylinder mechanism working smoothly.
