There are several out there.

I had narrowed it down to two, the simple bike-rack style CBI (it's cheap) and Tire Gate's adventure series which puts the spare into a basket so it sits near flush with the ass end of the truck.

Both of these are expensive solutions to the fact that you can't carry a large spare UNDER the truck, but cheaper than a bumper setup. The departure angle issue is another consideration, since the HitchGate doesn't seem to sacrifice much with its flush fit.

Still, not sure what's worse, wasting cargo space with a full size spare (which needs to be strapped down or it will kill you) or having one follow you, floating a foot behind your rig.

How large of a tire are you trying to carry? I believe 34s will fit in the stock location, and I'm not aware of anyone running 35s on our trucks yet. If the tire will fit in the stock location, I would keep it there. The clearance you will lose from having something on your hitch, no matter how close to the bumper, isn't worth it to me. I have a stock SR5 bumper that I've scratched, cracked, and had to pop back into place at least a dozen times, but the thing that always takes the abuse first is the trailer hitch receiver.

I have a 285/70R17 BFG TA/KO I can't get it to lock all the way in the up position when I crank the lever, it won't sit flush with the frame and it jiggles about.

Let me rephrase it, SHOULD I be able to get that tire to fit under my TE?

Yes, you should be able to get that tire to fit. I'm running a 285/70R17 in my spare position without issue.

same here....285/70/17 Duratrac fits like a glove in the stock location. Hangs a little lower being a 285, but the diameter of the tire is not a problem, raises and lowers as it should.

When you crank it up pull it tight against the hitch and it'll fit up and in nice and snug.
