Hitch Questions

1. Where to buy a hitch?

2. I think there is a plug under there (hard to tell...lots of SNOW!). Do these things come "pre-wired"?

Thanks in advance.

What kind of hitch do you want? Factory (frame mount 7300lbs or cross member mount 5000lbs non WDH) or aftermarket?

Check the classifieds on here, there was a factory frame mount one for $75. Others are the Curt 13445 or the Hidden Hitch 17779(?). You can find them on ebay or hitch factory sites for cheap.($150 new) They are easy to install as well.

You should be factory wired with a 7 pin bargman plug under the bumper with the wiring harness for a brake controller under the dash, left side wall above parking brake. Should have the wiring adapter in the glovebox.

My suggestion is to determine how strong of a hitch you actually need and then shop for the "look" and price you can afford.

There are some really nice looking units that almost hide within the lines of the 4Runner, while others are quite utilitarian.

You should be pre-wired for the lights. May have to get under and look for the harness, but it should be there.

Good luck and post us some pics with your write-up.

Thanks for the info guys! Not sure what kind of hitch I want..prob looking to tow a 3500lb camper.

Any of those hitches will handle that weight unless you plan on using a weight distributing hitch. In that case you need a frame mounted hitch to handle the leverage forces, the cross member mounted one is not designed for use with a WDH.

Yup, not too hard. 6 bolts to remove, a little hard to reach the top two, but it can be done without removing the bumper cover using a ratcheting box wrench. New frame mount is a simple 10 minute bolt on. 4 bolts per side. You may have difficulty on the passenger side due to the exhaust resonator being in the way. If you pull the rubber hanger off you can move it to the side for better access. You may also need to move/modify the stock plug.

My '08 came with the tow package so I can't say what is or isn't on another '08 w/o the package. Sorry, can't help.
