Hitch receiver holes not lining up

Have a new to me 2016 T4R SR5. My receiver hitch goes in fine but when I try to put something else in it, like a bike rack or a basket, the holes do not seem to want to line up. Anyone else have this issue? What was your resolution? Thx

Nope, never had that problem and i've used hitch, backet and dirtbike hauler. Are you sure you aren't going too far in and hitting the spare tire?

Or possibly the tubes on your other inserts are too long and hitting the spare before the holes line up? If that's the case you can just have the tubes shortened or do it yourself.

I have the same issues on a 2016 SR5 as well. Just haven't had time to really decide on a fix yet.

The fix for a 2016 is to bring it back and get a new hitch

Has the vehicle been rear ended? There should be a 3/4" to 1" gap between the hitch and spare tire

This has been discussed before - don't remember the outcome. Do some Google, like:

With the pin inserted on one side, how far off is the hole on the other side? A quarter inch, half inch?

I know the hitch tube itself on my 2016 is a lot tighter than the one on my old 2010 Highlander Limited. Every dang thing I pulled rattled on the Highlander. Nothing rattles when hooked to my 4Runner, even my girlfriend's old piece of junk 5' x 8' 1-ton-rated trash trailer that I renovated 2 years ago with a complete wire brushing, Ospho treatment and a case of rattle cans of Rustoleum primer. And 2 new 14" tires from Northern on sale. Spared no expense.

I also have a 16' boat on a trailer, a heavy 2-bike rack, fold down cooler rack, etc., fwiw, so I'm surprised to hear there're 4Runners with problems (other than that goofy light plug location - jeez)

And a spare with larger diameter than stock can cause this problem

Thanks for the responses. I did do an initial search and found an old thread from 4-5 years back where someone described a similar issue. No resolution was ever discussed though.

I am aware of the spare tire limitation and that is not it. I've tried jiggling it, wiggling it and everything else. I know it is not my accessories because I used the same ones, until recently, on my '04 since it was new.

Well, you could look and see why they are not lining up...

Seems like it would be obvious and there is definitely not anything complex about a 2" receiver hitch.
