Hitch Recovery Shackle Question

I use the BOLT locking hitch pin for mine. It "learns" your car key the first time you use it, so no extra keys to carry around.
Been on there full-time for about 28k use as a daily driver, about 4k off road Still solid and hasn't seized up from all the dust (yet)

Probably depends where you park or neighborhood. If you live near a bunch of offroaders, I have a few would feel lucky. I personally dont have my shackles attached till I need them .

I use the locking pin from my trailer hitch since I don't own one that doesn't lock.

I leave mine in all the time. One less thing to fumble with during a recovery situation. Also one less thing to store with the rest of my recovery gear. That crap takes up a lot of room in the cargo area. Don’t care if people think I’m a poser or not. I go off road often and it shows in the “pinstripes”. Ultimately, I do whatever is convenient for me.
I use a locking hitch pin to secure the shackle mount to the hitch. The shackle itself isn’t locked and I’ve never had one stolen. Two on the front bumper and one on the hitch. If they want it bad enough, no lock is going to stop them anyway.

I don't leave mine on. Why tempt normally honest people. Also, cuts down on rattle.
For recovery, a straight pull I use the pin. Off center pull I'll use the shackle. Mine moves horizontally (doesn't hang down).
I don't think anyone around here would steal a shackle. They're not expensive and everyone has them.
But I keep them along with the receiver point in the kit. I know where they are and they won't get damaged on the trail.

+1 for the Bolt. Super convenient to not have to worry about a second key when you need to lock/unlock the receiver. I've had one on for 3 years and nearly 50k miles with zero issues.
I also leave my shackle in all the time unless I'm towing. One less thing to have to think about/have rattling around in the back.
It’s a universal tool that takes a few seconds to steal. Don’t leave it in the hitch 24/7.
I keep mine stored with the jack. If you put the shackle around the jack and have the jack properly secured in the mount, don’t need to worry about it becoming a projectile during a wreck.

Had some issues on real dusty/muddy offroad trips where folks who had shackles attached had issues with the bolts getting stuck. Took some extra time and work to get them removed.
I have left mine in when I forgot, but generally keep them out unless I'm traveling somewhere. It's highly unlikely I will need to pull someone or get pulled out of a ditch in suburbia.
If you want or need to leave them on your rig, you can tighten them with a wrench and make it more difficult for the casual theft. If you really want to lock them in there use the red loctite and they will need a torch. If the thief is willing to carry a torch to steel your shackles he probably needs them more than you.

I keep mine on, just in case somebody rear ends me while texting and driving. Grabbed the tyger lock off amazon, 1 key stays in center console, other stays in house. Also grabbed these garden hose gaskets so no rattling, plus changed all my garden hose gaskets as well. Although I just looked and they were $4.88 when I purchased gaskets. Amazon.com: 40 Pack Power Pressure Washer O-Rings for 1/4”, 3/8”, M22 Quick Connect Coupler, Each 20 Pieces: Garden & Outdoor

I keep mine with my recovery gear when not on a trail. On days I know I'll be out on trails I put it in before I leave, pop it back out when I get home.
