Hole in airbox by MAF 2003 v8 SR5

Hi, I searched here but I can’t seem to find a thread with pics and explaining in detail what I’m asking, so let me know if there is already a thread about this with pics. Just Like the title says, I have a Hole in my airbox right below the mass airflow sensor it doesn’t look like it’s supposed to be there but I wanted to double check and see if anybody knows exactly what this is? Was the previous owner trying to do some kind of modification? I just want to know if this hole is normal or if I need to patch it up or purchase a new airbox? Thanks

That hole shouldn't be there. Don't think that it would affect performance at all. Hole leads back to the airbox/cleaner so you could leave it. If you wanted to slap some hd duct tape on there I'm sure that would work.

I would suggest just taping over the hole as well.

That's a pretty rough hole for a drill bit! Almost looks like something chewed it open...

From your description and the pictures the hole is at the MAF sensor, so the clean side of the filter. Meaning it goes to the engine not back to the air box. This hole will effect performance as the MAF reading will be incorrect. You will likely be pushing more air and possibly running a little lean on your Air to Fuel ratio. Not sure if 4Runners run rich A/F ratio stock but lean is not advisable. This might also be boosting performance but you're also letting unfiltered/unclean air into the engine. Bad idea.

Duct tape should work. You can also get plastic putty to cover it up permanently. You can find a plastic repair kit anywhere.

Just to clarify, are there 2 holes or only one, from the photos it seems there a hole on the outside on the flat end of the rounded portion and then another on the inside on the side of the rounded portion?

Either way it doesn't look like a hole should be in either place and neither looks to have been drilled or from the factory, I would definitely seal the hole(s), especially the one on the outside.

Thanks for The response. I figured it shouldn’t be there because it just looks off. this truck sat for about five or six months before I bought it and I thought maybe creature chewed through it.

Thanks for the response. This site has been a huge amount of help. I’ve done a lot improvements with the help of all the sticky’s and DIY walkthroughs. I was looking for 4th gen and stumbled upon this one in a church parking lot Pretty much abandoned By the owner. Bought it for $700 dollars and slowly but surely made it run and look pretty decent. I figured it would affect the A/F ratio because of the spot the hole was at.

Two holes but only one looked like it was supposed to be there. I thought the previous owner tried some kind of modification but she was an old Lady, so that thought went out the window pretty quickly. Lol

Ya, that was my thought. I was chasing a misfire on cylinder two and noticed this when I took the airbox off. Definitely doesn’t look like it would help my A/F ratio changed the plugs and one ignition coil for the cheap Chinese one that was in there and it did the trick. I normally don’t post stuff because there is always a post about any problem I’ve ever encountered. This site is great. Had this truck for under a year and bought it for $700
