Holy Grail or a little too much rust?

I'd be curious to know how it got so much rust underneath for being a California car. Did the PO drive through salt water?

It needs some attention but the asking price isn't out of the ballpark.

It's being sold in Minnesota. Owner bought it in Cali and took it to Minny. Which, as I said before, is baffling that he didn't weatherproof it if he knew what winter conditions in Minny did to the undercarriages of these trucks.

180k, a leaking sunroof, peeling clearcoat AND it need brakes??

I don't care how geeked out someone would be about the options on this one, $7900 for that truck is out of control...

Wait. Timeout. AND it needs the TB replaced.

Dear lord. Delusion.

Welcome to people trying to sell their 4runner's in Colorado. The people here have a ridiculous stereotype of these trucks.

Do you realize how much it costs if you take it to a decent shop to have it professionally under coated? Plus not many around shops here will even do it or do a half assed job. Then you have to factor in the fact that these vehicles are almost 20 years old and in the eyes of the average person they aren't worth investing money in to like that.

It can't be that expensive. We have our Matrix sprayed with Rust Check every year and it's 140$ CAD.

I never bothered with the 4Runner because the damage is basically already done, so I don't plan on dumping loads of cash in it just to polish the brass on the Titanic. I buy a couple of cans of rust check and spray it myself just to slow down the process.

Anywho... it would have been a wise investment to have had it oil sprayed when first migrating it to the northern states, but even so.. I doubt that you'd see much more than just surface rust on this particular example here.

I'm sure that frame has many, many more years left on it.

1999
5-speed
Multi-mode 4WD
e-locker
Leather and loaded.

It's basically one of THE most versatile/capable 3rd gens you can find.

Multi-mode T-Case for great "anytime" 4WD on-road.
Rear diff lock to handle essentially any off-road obstacle.
Unless someone swapped it, that's not a multi-mode transfer case. The Lmited had multi-mode, but no avail manual trans, and the SR5 had the regular J-shift transfer case and the available (but rare) manual trans.

I have a similar 'Highlander' manual trans '99 4Runner. Like that one - a manual trans with a locker, but green, and with cloth seats. Mine came without running boards, though, so it has those NLA front mudflaps.

That rust doesn't bother me at all, but I live in a rust belt state. Mine is a little bit flakier than that, it started life in NM but then went to WI for a while before I got it. And it' still getting salted here. Just wash it well, and often, and pay extra attention to rinsing out the interior of the frame. Find all the various holes and spray lots of clean water into them until the water drains out clear.

The extra inch of ride height is nice if you plan on leaving it bone stock, but I've modified mine anyhow so it could have started out at any ride height and it wouldn't matter.

I still never understand why people who live up north/ northeast fly out to buy a rust free vehicle and drive it in the winter especially where they salt. So much for a "rust free vehicle."

You can't buy a new one, so that's pretty much the only option! Was considering doing exactly that once mine dies.

It's probably not "too" much rust.

Honestly though, if you had a California car and maybe jacked the price up just for that, at least show what the frame looks like. Obviously he's not too proud of it or he would of gave us more pictures. Notice how all of the other pictures are good quality except for the frame pictures. I'll pass.

Yeah it adds up if you do it every year which I should've been more clear on. My point is that the average person(so none of us here) doesn't want to pay a bill like that. Especially when these trucks are getting to be pretty old. The view here in MN is buy it, drive it for as long as possible without major breakage then get a new vehicle. I'd also argue that some people that live in this state are too oblivious or too stupid to realize that cars need this kind of work done to them up here.
