Holy Supercharged 4Runner!!!!

Holy crap, I finally got a chance to get behind the wheel of my new supercharged rig! Had I known the difference the TRD supercharger makes, I would have added one to my other 4Runner years ago!!! If you're fed up with the power, or lack there of with a N/A 3.4, I highly advise supercharging yours!

I'm going to get the Flowmaster taken off before I start posting videos. It sounds like a fart can right now! I've been wondering if I can't just get the exhaust shop to install a resonator behind it to make it quieter.
 
I'm thinking of supercharging this summer and had some questions.

Mainly, does the boost amount ever change, like is it computer controlled to boost relative to outside pressure or can be changed without altering the pulley? Where I live you make at least a 4000' change in elevation on an almost daily basis, and it would suck to only be able to boost to what the lower elevation allows and then not have the boost increase as I gain elevation (or have to decrease the boost if I ever go to sea level).

Course I live with it without boosting, but it would be nice to always get the same performance since you lose 2psi of pressure going up the mountain.

Boost level will change a little bit depending on engine RPM in a positive displacement supercharger which is what the current TRD SC is. There is no means to vary the boost as far as I know but we are talking in generalities here. The pulleys on the SC is a fixed diameter resulting in a somewhat constant boost. Hope this makes sense.
 
They seem to not effect reliability that much. We bought our truck new in 1999. Put the super charger on the first month and our truck has about 190k miles now. Had to replace the nose cone/bearing once on the super charger other than it is great.

Wish I could say I the same about 1994 twin turbo rx7 (bought new) and 2004 turbo wrx (bought new).

If the supercharger is designed for 8psi, it will make 8psi at sea level, 8psi at Winter Park, and 8psi at the top of Pikes Peak. The density of the air will be different at each location, but the supercharger rate of increase will not. It is a mechanical device and does not alter it's characteristics for changes in air density.

According to the TRD paperwork, my SC was installed by the dealer on my '00 at 10k miles. This 4Runner is at 216,000 miles now, runs like a top, and has a night and day different driving characteristic over driving my '02 N/A 4Runner. The S/C should have been standard equipment on all of the heavy, underpowered 4Runners.

Most of what you've said is true, but this is not. A pulley designed for 6psi @sea level will produce 6psi at sea level, but boost (from a supercharger) will decrease as air density (elevation) does.

Also, for example, say you have a supercharged performance car. Your supercharger has a 10lb pulley on it, and you see 10lbs of boost. Then, you decide you want to upgrade your cylinder heads, so you put on a set of high volume aluminium heads with larger CC intake and exhaust ports. With no other changes, you're now seeing only 7.5-8lbs of boost.

This is true. When I had my 65 Mustang (sold last October) the boost would drop (about 1#) when the temperatures got over about 90 (air not as dense).

Superchargers are great (and I love that sound). That video is impressive for a 4Runner (a supercharged brick :happy:).

Plain Jane Quick Test Run 30-80 in about 350' and 4.5 seconds (with .5 seconds for the shift).

It's all in what you want to put into it I guess. I don't plan on doing anything else to it. I'm so happy with the improvement over my N/A 4Runner that it will be just fine for me. I'll be driving my N/A for 2 weeks at a time while I'm working, and my S/C'ed 4Runner the other 2 weeks I'm off. It will be a whole new respect every time I get off work!!
