Homelink added to my 97

I know this has been done but I thought I would share anyway. It was pretty easy. All I did was drop my sunroof controls and light/mirror, measure and cut a hole (peeled the headliner back a bit first to over lap the cutout), wired it to the constant 12v on the mirror light, and grounded it to one of the mirror bolts. I did take pics but none turned out well as I got impatient and did this mod in the middle of the night. Got the rolling code Homelink off Ebay for $15. Cheaper than replacing my broken Chamberlain controller at $29 with a much cooler result...:bluejump:

Yeah I wasn't into the roof console swap, think the cutouts for the sunroof switches look goofy. So thats why I did the homelink thing.

You can search "rolling code Homelink" on eBay and get the part for $20. I did it one way and I don't like it, so I just order new parts to try it again.

Good to see this revived.. I think this is one of the best most used mods I have ever done, and over a year later its still working perfect.

ok. does that work for all? i live at an apartment and have a garage and would like to have an opener so i don't have to get out. i was looking on ebay and there are units that have more than 2 wires. which one is the one to get? definitely the mod to do.

Just curious... why did you mount the buttons on the roof instead of in the overheard compartment to the right of the sunroof controls?

I like the mod, I've seen pictures of it done both ways. My 97 Limited doesn't have a pre-cut slot in either area, but I'm very interested in doing this mod. Which mounting spot do you guys recommend?

You can program up to 3 devices. Like garage door, gate, and lights.

I use mine for the garage door at home and the one at work.

The sending unit is rather large so there are not many places you can mount it. All you see are the buttons, but the rest if it is a cube that is 2.5"x2.75"x.75".

I liked the more "factory" look mounted in the roof. I had a car that had it like this before. And all I had to do was cut a hole in the headliner and the board instead of trimming all the plastic. It took some maneuvering to get it in but I think it was worth it for the clean look.

Were I to do this mod, I would use switched power for added security. That way if the vehicle were parked outside, one would not be able to open the garage simply by breaking the window and pressing a button. They would have to supply power to the unit first.
