Homelink Garage Door Opener

Thanks Man, Finally cracked the code (no pun intended) on what I was doing wrong - Holding the "Learn" button too long and kept erasing everything (Duh)
Bottom line:
- Make sure at least one(1) handheld opener is programmed, once that is done Homelink will accept a code.
- "Press" the Learn button on the opener motor Once and go to the T4R and "press" whatever button you want for 3 secs. Let Go and "press" again.
Done.
*As for additional handheld openers or the key pad or another Toyota same thing depending on what it is.
"Press" the Learn Button. Once and then go "press" the Button on whatever you are programming until the lights on your opener motor Flash and you're golden.

Big Mistake I was making was Holding the "Learn" Button too long and erasing anything/everything within range.

Ahhh, that's what I did wrong back when.....it was always a mystery to me what had happened and since then, I simply move the other vehicles and remotes out of range. Good to know I will not have to do that anymore. Thanks bud. Be safe.

Ok, 2 beers in I got it to work. I have a Genie GDO. Moved the frequency button on the Genie's hand held to the lower setting, trained the HL (with the button at the higher setting wouldn't work). And then did the rolling code routine. Success!

I'd love to program my Homelink but I find one major flaw with its design and that is it is always on. IMO it would have been nice if Toyota had designed it so it only worked with a key in the ignition. The reason for this is if you park your truck outside and someone breaks into it, they can open your garage. I think I read on some other forum how to re-wire it so that it was only on when they key was in the ignition but I'd have to google for that again.

I had my mine working for about a week and then it just stopped working. I am not sure why or what I may have done wrong. Ended up having to relearn both door openers in the TR4 and my Tundra grrr.:frusty:

Sounds like the garage opener "forgot" all saved devices. Check your manual (for the garage door opener). This is an option for the scenario in which a remote is lost or stolen. It shouldn't do it by itself though so if it keeps up, then probably an issue.

Thanks for the info yeah had 1 of the openers break in the process also not sure why just stopped working. I have a Chamberlain opener that was in the house when i bought it last year. So maybe 5 years old.

I will need to try and link it up again, the first time I used the learn bottom cause I could not get it to work with the remote I have. I followed the manual but had no luck.

As did mine, they actually did quite a few things at delivery.

1. They programmed my homelink.
2. They programmed "HOME" in my NAV.
3. They paired my iPhone to my NAV and transferred my contacts.
4. They went over the smart key system to ensure I understood exactly how it all worked.


I was pretty impressed with my sales guy. I'm an I.T. Engineer, so I'm pretty techie, but it was pretty fun learning all the cool tech features on the truck.

You should never program HOME into your nav. Thieves are getting smarter. They will steal your 4Runner and then burglarize your HOME because they know you are away. You can call your house anything but home. Ask me how I know this.

After reading the manual instructions for Homelink programming several times, Performing the 'rolling code' instructions, Performing the non-rolling instructions, Performinng many combos of the two, Reading and performing the many different posted tips here, and finally getting the wife involved, I was ready to rip down my openers.

I called the Homelink number, listened to the instructions and accomplished the programming the first time for both my openers. The automated instructions are differ from what in in the manual.

Bumping an old thread. Does your car have to be within a close range to the garage door opener? I'm trying to do the rolling code, but it's just not working.

Like several folks in this thread, I screwed around with this process for entirely too long before I finally got it to work. I think my issue was that in the "rolling code" instructions in the 4Runner manual, it says to press the Homelink button twice, and possibly a third time.

The key is to hold the button for a couple of seconds, until the LED goes from a fast blink to solid or slow blink. On the third long press, the garage door opened/closed as it should.

Otherwise, I went through all the steps in my door opener instructions and the 4Runner manual to get the Homelink buttons working. Good luck to anybody else who comes across this thread looking for help!

I was having trouble until I realized I was attempting to "learn" off a universal door opener. Took less than 5 minutes once I grabbed the OEM clicker

I was following the instructions in the owners manual and had no luck. I then went to the home link website and followed their instructions and it worked the first time. I don't recall the exact differences in the instructions but they were not the same.

If you've been messing around and pressing buttons. Do a reset on your homelink. There are 3 buttons press 1 and 3 at the same time and then hold for 10 seconds to reset. Then in front of your garage press the garage clicker and the desires homelink button (1, 2 or 3) for 10 seconds. your garage door should stop at some point. Release the button from your clicker and homelink. This should work.

Thanks for this thread! It helped me get our 4Runner Homelink button programmed and working using the rolling code instructions. The rolling code instructions are:

- Press the "Learn" button on the garage door opener
- Determine which one of the 3 4Runner Homelink buttons is to be programmed
- Press and hold the 4Runner Homelink button for at least 2 seconds
- Repeat the previous step 10 times

Other people/videos stated to only repeat the press and hold the 4Runner Homelink button 3 times, but 3 times was not working for me. So I repeated the step 10 times, and it worked for me.

I did the rolling code instructions multiple times before doing the non-rolling code instructions above. So it is unknown to me if we both rolling and non-rolling instructions are needed.

Noticed my Homelink works even when the 4R is turned off? Is there a way to change this? I don't like the idea that if I park it in the driveway for the night, somebody could use it to open my garage.

disconnect the battery. there's no menu setting to disable that. you could redo the wiring and tap into an ACC fuse or something like that but damn that's a lot of work for very little risk

consensus is that it's always on
