Hood Paint - To blend or not to blend.

Hey guys, I have a 2017 SR5 Premium in Super White less than a year old that I just ordered the scoop hood for and I am trying to figure out my plan for paint. I'm looking for people who have done the hood swap and had the new hood painted. The dealer doing the paint wants to blend the fenders for about $300 extra because they say that the paints won't match. While I understand the concept, I just get the feeling its not 100% necessary on such a new vehicle. I just want to get some word on what the reality is and if it's worth the extra $$$. Here's my question;

How old was your T4R when you did the swap and did you get just the hood painted or blend in the fenders as well? How did it turn out?

I used to work at an auto body shop and you can go either way. People think white is an easy paint to match but its probably one of the more difficult colors to match. The same white paint on a plastic bumper cover can look different on a metal body panel. Personally, I wouldn't blend because the less they can touch other panels, the better.

I would remedy this by going with a high quality flat black on the hood,and enjoy.

After the hood and fender matches, they now don't match the rest of the truck. Dealer will then tell you to blend the rest.

I'd say leave it. You'll be the only one to notice that the hood is not 100% match unless you point it out, of course it is a different story if this dealer or the shop they use is really bad at matching colors.

are you willing to have a hood that somewhat matches, 300.00 extra and no right to complain? Or are you willing to have a hood that "matches" the fenders and maybe the rest of the car, less 300.00, and complaining rights?:juggle:

if it were me I would skip the blend cost and if the hood isnt matching throw a vinyl hood decal on it.

I feel like with such a new car, it'll be so close you're absolutely going to be the only one who notices.

Get it done right and have it blended into the fenders. Or don't ***** if it looks off. Hell, it very well may even be off when blended, but to a lesser degree to the eye.

I replaced my right side damaged fender with a new one the shop painted separately. I left there the original damaged flare piece for color reference (magnetic gray). As expected the color still came out off a bit but only noticeable if I look hard. The hood and the fender do not meet in a tangential fashion so the color looks different between the two even on the side that’s 100% factory. I saved around $500 by doing the assembly on my own and not getting the overspray. Perhaps ask your shop the cost of overspray after the fact to see how much the fix would cost you if the difference bothers you later on.

Thanks for the replies guys. I know a lot of people have done this swap but I’m still kind of curious what the most common route is. I definitely understand the risk I run of not getting blended and not matching so still just weighing my options, any experience with this would great, thanks!

If your 4runner is new I would take the chance and just have them do the hood. And don’t blend the sides in. A few years back my wife’s new 2013 Acura TL. Dark grey she dented the passenger front panel and was the car being pretty much brand new the body shop found one same color from a wrecked Tl. They switched them out and you could not tell that it was changed. Did not need any paint work. Hope this helps.
