Hood scoops

Couple questions regarding the TRD and trail model hood scoops.

I have a 2016 Limited that does not have a scoop but I like the look of the scoop. I think there are a couple different size scoops Toyota used probably on the earlier years that are a bit larger and newer years smaller.

My questions are, Do the scoops serve a function such as air flow induction?

Can a hood from a TRD or Trail with the scoop be put on a limited?

If there are different sizes based on different years, what years have the larger scoops that would still fit on my 2016 Limited?

Thanks

They will fit but they serve no function. I had a scoop on a old Tacoma and all it did for me was produce a nasty glare that drove me crazy. I will never buy another Toyota with a non functioning, sun blinding scoop.

All 5th gen hood scoops are the same size.

You can easily swap your limited hood with any other 5th gen hood regardless of trim.

They serve absolutely no function other than for looks.

As reported, many complain of an unbearable glare that gets thrown off the scoop right into the driver’s eyes.

While I like the little extra detail it gives to the runner (and Tacoma), the fact that it’s fake AND causes issues for the driver is pretty ridiculous to me.

You can purchase aftermarket scoops from eBay or fashion your own from cardboard.

Glare driving towards the sun

As stated earlier, the glare sucks during those times of the day that it happens.

I really like the look on mine anyways, throw a hat up there to block it and it’s all good. I’d get the fake scoop if I had to do it over.

It’ll fit and you want it. If you don’t have one, get a hat and call it good.

I guess I got the info I requested. The scoop to me is nothing more than Eye Candy from the outside but from those who already have them a deterrent as far as glare.

I will live with what I have because we are already a bit unhappy with the wife's RX350 that suffers a severe glare issue with no scoop but just the right angle on the dash in certain sun conditions.

I suppose I can still like the way the TRD/Trail models and some of the Tacomas look with the scoops but keep on loving my 4R Ltd.

I completely agree. Love the look of th scoop on mine when stationary. Driving is another story. The glare is awful.

If you want a scoop, it can't hurt to put out a WTB or WTT thread. Just post your color and you might get lucky. I traded my scoop away and the guy really liked it.

I've been looking for a vinyl scoop sticker similar to what's available for Tacoma hood scoops to reduce glare to no avail. I think a custom one will need to be done.

I now have another 4runner with a hood scoop, and had one without it, I really have no idea, what you're talking about with this "glare"
Both mine with the scoops I never ever noticed a "glare"
:noidea:

I suppose if I really wanted one simply for the looks then a very inexpensive peel and stick one in flat black might be the way to go for all the functionality they have.

I do suspect however given that there is a cut out through the hood they could assist to some degree in dissipating some engine compartment heat if slow going in a very hot environment. Here in NY and never taking my 4R LTD off road I see no real benefit at all other than the cosmetics which I can live without.

Anyone with a scoop consider making it functional?

on my old 99, I did cut out the cup part of the scoop to allow more fresh air into the engine bay. It did make it dirtier lol but I would clean it every now and then.
Not sure if I would have spent the money to make it more functional.

On 3rd and 4th gen models in other global markets, the scoop was functional for the intercooler on turbo-diesel engines.
If you cut it open on north american models all it will do is attempt to direct some airflow onto the plastic engine cover, which is basically pointless.

Our '04 Sport had the scoop and never noticed a glare issue. My '14 SR5P does not and I wish it did.

YES

In fact, now you would increase the pressure inside the engine compartment, counter the flow of air through the radiator and make the radiator less effective.

Just do this... Toast ready to serve when you reach camp :)
