Therefore you think Dr Fauci is stepping back from his previous stance on how urgent it is, in the face of the latest evidence. (And somehow you presume he deliberately used faulty models to generate mass hysteria).
But if you looked a little deeper into the article, in the Funding and Disclosures section, you’d see that “This editorial was published on February 28, 2020, at NEJM.org.”
So he wrote this sometime before February 28. He is much more concerned about it today. You got it backwards. Let’s strive to be truthful and accurate.

Complaining and trying to discredit scientific experts is of no use. Our opinions are not going to change the national response now.

Better late than never though.

To be sure, bad actors are everywhere. While I don't see an indication of motive in that article, I imagine it could have been wrongly motivated. Nevertheless, I do assume that the majority of people are trying to do the right thing, and I believe that's the best assumption to make. The ones who aren't are those deliberately coughing on the elderly and others, coughing on produce in grocery stores, licking toilets, etc.

Just throwing out number to show an example how the test for the corona virus is being conducted. You have a population of 10,000 people, 3,000 of those people have symptoms but yet only 50 tests. But then the following day you have 100 tests and 100 people are confirmed. So the "infection rate" goes up. Then the day after that you have 200 tests and now 200 people are confirmed and so on.

To actually know if you are trying to flatten the curve, you needed to start testing when it was known that China had it.

An example is what people are referring to as the pandemic response team - actually known as the global health security team in the NSC that Bossert oversaw with Adm Ziemer. Both were forced out in 2018 and the team was disbanded.

A few other examples:
The administration ignored the CSIS report calling for better pandemic preparedness (released in 2019, IIRC)
The administration ignored warnings given upon inauguration during one of the transition exercises about global pandemics (that would have been 2016)

Lots of things have gone wrong. The first batch of tests developed in the US were defective, for example.
But the admin blatantly ignored the need to have pandemic response plans and capabilities in place. Then called it a hoax for several weeks. And that, IMO, is an inexcusable display of failure to lead.

Here in Hawaii we been getting about 10 a day. Yes I know more probably have it and more will get it because results take days.

But if we stop it from ballooning to 100 a day I will feel damn good that we are flattening the curve. Just because we don't have actual numbers doesn't mean we can't flatten it. Main goal is to keep the beds from being overloaded plain and simple.

If you ask me its not a matter of if but when you get it. Unless you are being like bubble boy.

I went to Costco, Walmart, Bottle King and the Polish Beer Store this afternoon.
I go to Costco at least once a week.
Costco had everything I needed 'cept these Centrum Silver vitamins my wife is always force feeding me.
Walmart probably had 70-80% of its canned goods shelves full.
Nearly got into a fight in the Bottle King parking lot because one of the kids there was explaining to me that they are now "online only" and "pick up in 48 hours" and apparently that irritated what appeared to be an alcoholic roofer. After he put in his 2 cents "'bout your government" the kid and I continued with the conversation.
I used this opportunity to go to the Polish beer store and buy a case of my favorite.

Im aware of 2 families where mom dad and the kids tested positive in a borough several miles form us. I haven't met them. I was told that they said the Chinese Virus is like a mild flu. My crocus are saying "'eff u" to the Chinese Virus because it's warm and they are going to bloom no matter what the government says.
