Here's a chart showing the number of intensive care beds per 100000 inhabitants. There are some interesting conclusions to be drawn from this chart.

I wonder if they know that the people invading the Hamptons from NYC, own weekend summer homes there. Without said individuals the Hamptons would be nothing. From west Hampton to east Hampton, Sag Harbor to south Hampton, all very wealthy homes built by those who live in western Nassau county and NYC. If i had the choice to be on lock down, i will pick the home with under ground pool and a tennis court. Its peak season for the summer. This is what the rich and shameless do every year. Next they will cancel the "white party" that will upset more then a few.

Thanks for posting this opinion piece. But don’t forget to read the comments at the bottom of the article. They are generally in disagreement with the author.

I agree that we need more and better data to make good plans and decisions. But the author makes no suggestion as how to do this.

I did learn something, though. The word “hecatomb”.

This shutdown is really screwing up the whole world economy. It seems we need to virus test mass quantities of the population, and often, to get the data necessary to decide who and when they go back to work.

I'm pretty confident the 16yr old with no comorbidities on ECMO who's looking at a sub 10% chance of surviving at my local hospital would disagree with the Georgia guy...

Not trying to be a butthead or anything, but just crunching the numbers quickly and basically, and I know that there's still going to be exponential growth for the coronavirus and the R0 and survival statistics are different between the two, but still. Basic crunching with the 32k deaths so far (let's call it 3 months) puts us on track for 128k deaths in a year. That's way lower than the regular flu.

How is the regular flu not overwhelming hospitals yet still killing so many people? Are there just that many people in the hospitals at one time that even though there are lots the hospitals have the capacity for it? Are people more commonly dying of the flu at home?

I'm not trying to downplay the seriousness of the coronavirus. It is very serious, especially with the R0 and survival statistics. I'm of the mind to think that there was some sort of leaked bioweapon incident at the facility near the market. I definitely think the world should rethink its priorities in light of the CCP covering up the coronavirus in the early days and putting the whole world in this craptacular situation. (DON'T PROP UP THE CCP BECAUSE THEIR LABOR IS SO CHEAP AND THEIR SMALL PERCENTAGE OF THE POPULATION YET STILL NUMERICALLY LARGE MIDDLE CLASS IS LUCRATIVE.) Still, is there something I'm missing when thinking about the basic numbers?

Remember that these Covid-19 deaths do not replace flu deaths. They are in *addition* to flu deaths. And the outbreak is not over. No one knows the ultimate total. There will be more corona viruses in the future. Hopefully the world will respond better next time.

True, especially the addition part, but it's like, there's a gargantuan number of people that die of the flu every year, and nobody seems to care.

Is that right? I'm not so sure.

Per the video I posted awhile ago, according to that Dr, every year up to 14% of people counted as having the flu actually have a coronavirus (SARS, MERS, or whatever).

I'd be surprised if people actually get tested in every typical year for the flu vs a coronavirus.

Goes back to what is the excess rate of infection and mortality of this coronavirus vs years past.
