Numbers early on can be very deceptive and it won't be until this whole thing is over, that we can look back, determine how lethal (or not) this was. At that point we can point fingers, do a hot wash, compile lessons learned and implement changes.

What we all should be doing now is learn from other countries - other states and communities - and follow the recommendations of the best experts in the world.

Those recommendations haven't changed - practice social distancing, wash your hands etc.

The recommendations have turned into totalitarianism in many areas - forced stay at home and close your business directives from governments or else get fines and jail time. It's quite unconstitutional.

Not trying to be a butthead or anything, but just crunching the numbers quickly and basically, and I know that there's still going to be exponential growth for the coronavirus and the R0 and survival statistics are different between the two, but still. Basic crunching with the 32k deaths so far (let's call it 3 months) puts us on track for 128k deaths in a year. That's way lower than the regular flu.

How is the regular flu not overwhelming hospitals yet still killing so many people? Are there just that many people in the hospitals at one time that even though there are lots the hospitals have the capacity for it? Are people more commonly dying of the flu at home?

I'm not trying to downplay the seriousness of the coronavirus. It is very serious, especially with the R0 and survival statistics. I'm of the mind to think that there was some sort of leaked bioweapon incident at the facility near the market. I definitely think the world should rethink its priorities in light of the CCP covering up the coronavirus in the early days and putting the whole world in this craptacular situation. (DON'T PROP UP THE CCP BECAUSE THEIR LABOR IS SO CHEAP AND THEIR SMALL PERCENTAGE OF THE POPULATION YET STILL NUMERICALLY LARGE MIDDLE CLASS IS LUCRATIVE.) Still, is there something I'm missing when thinking about the basic numbers?

Here’s my read on it. Since this is new, the world’s population hasn’t developed an immunity to it. So when it broke out, it spread rapidly (and still is) because there was no resistance. That’s what makes it “overwhelming“. Influenzas, on the other hand, don’t break out like that because it’s already kind of all over the place. People are accustomed to influenza, so the panic side isn’t there. And people aren’t typically hospitalized for the flu, so hospital capacities don’t get exceeded.

One thing I think is true but don’t have info to prove it is this:
It seems the older I get, the less often I get sick. I believe that’s because I’ve encountered a lot of diseases over the course of 61 years and have accumulated a lot of immunities, developed a lot of antibodies. So if I do get the flu, those things help me get over it more easily despite my age. Added to this, I believe (someone please correct me if I’m wrong), is the fact that our respiratory system degrades as we age and becomes less efficient. This Coronavirus primarily attacks the respiratory system. Coupling a less-efficient respiratory system with a virus your body has never seen before is a recipe for trouble for the elderly. This might help explain why children fare so well, because they have younger, healthier lungs and such. Just a theory.

I wonder how many people are kept in the hospital who dont need to be there because the hospitals are afraid getting sued?

These guys should have been fired along time ago too. Heads of hospitals leave their hospital and go hide when there is a problem?

I dunno. Not going to engage in disputes about this - those kinds of discussions never end and never resolve anything. They just end up in piss fights, and divide people. I was simply giving my opinion on the disease itself.

I do know this - a guy I work with, his father-in-law is on a ventilator and is in pretty bad shape. He took an "Aw, it's nothing" attitude the first couple days of his symptoms. He's in his 70s. It seems the majority of hospitalizations are elderly folk. His wife is now sick, too.

Actually it isn't, but that is beside the point.

What do you recommend? Business a usual and to hell with those people who are vulnerable?

If everyone were smart/disciplined enough to follow the recommendations, then there would be little need for draconian methods.

The one thing that appears to set COVID-19 apart from the seasonal flu is that with the seasonal flu, you can generally tell you is sick and stay away from them.

In addition, the seasonal flu does not appear to survive on surfaces as long as COVID-19. It is these differences, along with the fact that COVID-19 tends to turn into lower respiratory tract pneumonia in susceptible persons, that makes it different and - for most people - scary.

So far, we know that social distancing works to slow the spread.

This isn't the time to speculate on the origin of the virus and it'll be after this is over that a determination can be made if this is a bio weapon that went awry or a naturally occurring phenomenon. We can also decide if China, other countries or our elected leaders had any hand in a cover-up and what actions need to be take.

But right now, we need to show a global united front to slow the spread.

Free people should do what they feel is best for themselves. We don't need "Job for Life" "Guaranteed Pension" law making Bureaucrats, especially those who have little or no experience in the private sector, telling us what to do.

Good thing we have a private sector citizen w/ plenty of bankruptcy experience leading us now! Now, where's my check? :high5:

. . .

Yeah let’s just do this to the federal and state constitutions :moon:

This is going to turn out to be a big hoax. There’s no excuse for government over reach.

>12k people died from Swine flu and governments didn’t react this way.

Linear vs nonlinear mortality rates. Projecting it out assuming the same rate over time is *probably* wrong. That is why it doesn't seem that different. It's probably wrong because im assuming the isolation will not keep ARDS below the hospital capacity and that the rate doesn't reflect those that are sick but haven't died yet. Once hospitals hit capacity, death rates go way up.

It is very different from the flu because of the nonlinear nature of this AND because of the uncertainty. For example it could act like chickenpox and have effects 20 years later. Could be like herpes and recur over and over. For now we're just trying to get through the first wave with enough ventilators.

Maybe we'll have a vaccine in a week and only anti vaxxers will get it. Maybe we'll solve the social security imbalance...

Flu deaths hit >20k so far.

Meanwhile Dr Fauci was on CNN claiming there will be up to 200k Wuhan virus deaths in the US while also stating you just can’t believe fatality predictions due to uncertainty in the data

Yeah, he guessed that there will be between 100,000 and 200,000 Deaths. I think that’s a guess/estimate rather than a prediction. Pretty wide range, you know? I don’t think he’s so unwise as to attempt a prediction. In fact, I don’t see anyone doing that.

Too late. China already owns us. Have you ever tried to find any electronic item, or anything in a hardware store, *not* made in China?

I stopped buying "Made in China" products as best I could awhile ago. No food products at all. I would rather eat oatmeal for a week than buy food from China, Thailand, India.

Dont get me wrong I had some great engineers in India. Just dont buy food from that part of the world.
