Wow. CoB, I saw this thread in your sig, has Magnaflow since contacted you or tried to make this right? If not, I've got no problem buying from their competitors instead.

No, they've completely ignored me. I contacted BBB and they claim that it was installed incorrectly, even though they inspected the install themselves and told me it was done correctly. I used one of their recommended installers... unfortunately, they are well aware of my situation and talk badly about me behind my back amongst themselves according to my inside source.
It is definitely a wise choice on your behalf, avoiding them.

I have a Flowmaster on my truck, never had any problems with it. But thats probably because i live close to there main headquarters and went to them and personaly baught it there, and used one of there mechanics.

Just read this. Thanks for posting! I was considering buying one for my 4th gen. Do you have any ideas of what I should look at for a muffler now? I haven't heard of many types. I'm also a poor college student so I don't want to spend much money! Thanks for making this thread!

It is a shame that they consider you a 'punk kid'.
I would not expect a punk kid to drive to their headquarters for their own inspection and then try to get 75 dollars from them just because.
My thought would be that they don't want to admit to being wrong or having a crappy product. Once they shell out that 75, it's almost like admitting they were wrong.
Sounds like pride to me.
Sucks that you have to waste all your time and resources to drive around and even for the time to wait at the shop to install this muffler 3 times... I would lose it.
I feel bad for you man - it's a shame they never owned up either.
But at least you can see that you've swerved a good deal of sales away from them. :boxer:

Thanks for posting your experience with Magnaflow. I've been considering a muffler upgrade for my 4R and was leaning towards Magnaflow. After seeing what you've been through, and the links you provided of so many others having similarly un-addressed issues, I've scratched them off my list. I hope you'll be glad to know that even after 1.5 years of posting your grievance here about them that it's still making an impact to their business.

Damn Larry Norris...your infamy grows with time, and over $75. If you are still at Magnaflow then rest assured that you have lost out on another customer. One less muffler that I have to consider. Thanks COB

If you hit something offroad, or really shake the crap out of it.... I can see why they would void it. Other than that there's really no reason it should fall apart. Yeah, I read your post COB awhile back. Crazy. Wonder what's going on.
For what it's worth, I've had a 14" oval stainless muffler I bought as part of a full exhaust system for my focus. It's been on the car since 2009. Then I cut it off and made it work on my 4Runner a few months ago. Still doing alright. Maybe that size just sucks?

Sorry to hear about your muffler failure. Another faulty Magnaflow, with 30k of street driving no less. Haha, and they'll say you didn't have it installed correctly, or that your truck is not running properly.
I am also sorry you had to pay all costs to have it removed and another installed. You bought a product and should not have expected replacing it so soon.
Perhaps you bought yours before the quality decline. Wish my experience mirrored yours!
I have since purchased a Jardine muffler. It was from a discontinued Doug Thorley line. It also happens to be near 1 1/2 years old without any single issues whatsoever. No rattles and no broken welds. That's more than I can say for every magnaflow I've ever owned, combined.
3 mufflers in a row? I mean, come on! You can't make that up. A 4 banger, 2wd no less. My truck was shinier than dirty back then, that's a fact. I'd have had a hard time beating that muffler without the ability to climb over anything that could hit it. Rubber hangers sure kept it mounted soft yet sturdy, the same stuff that comes OEM. Never had any issues with my OEM exhaust, or my current exhaust. Shoddy quality.
Lots of people having issues with these mufflers. Did your 14" have a weld all the way around the core or was it spot welded? I would hope they put a little more effort into the model specific kits than their universal mufflers.

We have a Magnaflow on our 07 Xterra since 07, it has been fine. I guess/it seems quality control went down severely between 4 years ago. Another reason I love my flowmaster in my 02 T4R.

for the price I paid... it had better have been good quality. I admit I didn't check the core so I can't comment on that. I've taken a sawzall pretty close to body when I was retrofitting the system to my 4Runner. If it was going to come apart, it would have done it by now. I definitely shook the crap out of it, that's for sure. The mirror finish wiped clean like new with just a wet paper towel. I see they sell these on their own.
Like I said though, I read through this thread a few months back and a second time too if I'm not mistaken. Can't believe the poor quality of these things, and geez what a crappy experience. I've been nothing but happy with mine, but maybe it's just luck. Too bad because it sounds pretty good.

Well like I have said not just about Mufflers but really anything you buy, be it a car, an appliance or a cell phone. Doesn't really matter there are always going to be duds and lemons with every brand.
You could pay $800 for a Borla and have just as bad an experience as COB has with this Magnaflow.
You can research every single muffler made and in general you will find probably 85-90% of any particular brand where they have no problems whatsoever and buy again in a heartbeat.
But then there is that 10-15% of EVERY brand that buy a nightmare.
I just ordered a 12286 24" Magnaflow today, will be here tomorrow and on by or before Saturday, I just hope I am in the 85-90%.
If not then oh well, will yank it off, cuss em out and try something else and come on here and fully commiserate with COB.
I do not want a Flowmaster, too loud, don't like the baffle type mufflers.
I want something reasonably quiet but still flows nicely.
So I figure I got about a 80% chance of this Magnaflow doing fine and lasting around 7-10 years without a problem.
I just hope it doesn't drone on the highway, if it does I will ad one of those glasspac resonators to it.

OK, so after taking it the shop today to get my oil change after the 8000 mile trip (burned maybe 2 tablespoons of oil)I had them check the muffler because of the rattling I have been hearing.
I have to say now that COB is 100% correct the muffler started rattling probably within 1000 miles of straight highway use.
It now, while at a stoplight sounds like a Leprechaun is under the truck shaking a coffee can with several pieces of gold in it.
I actually liked the sound and performance of the Magnaflow, but the rattling while sitting at stoplights has got to go.
I am going to try to get Magnaflow to just give me my money back and I am going to buy a Borla.
I am going to tell them if they refund my money I will get the muffler shop to order a new Magnaflow, then if they send me a shipping label to pay for the return I will return it.
Thinking about the 40665 Turbo XL.
Although it says:
" Borla Turbo XL mufflers are recommended for larger engines."
I can not imagine why.

Wow, I have to admit, that's some record speed! Mine didn't even fail that quickly. Sorry to hear that happened, and may you have good luck with your future muffler purchases.
Hopefully we can be the voices that prevent future purchases of their inferior products.
