Horrible Gas Mileage

Hello, I have a 2011 TE. I barely get 300 miles with a full tank. I drive mostly in the city, about 70% city and 30% HW and I get 13.6MPG.

I called to make an appointment with my dealer. I used to get 315MPG when I bought it now I get 286MPG when I fill it up.

I knew it would cost me in gas but my brother in law has a 2012 SR5 upgrade package and he gets 17.3MPG. Something is not right here, isn't it the same engine no matter what version ?

I haven't done much research and I should, but how are these MPGs you guys are getting compare with other vehicles in the same class? Example, the unibody Honda Pilot?

I would prefer my next car to be a body-on-frame car, and have had my eye on the 4Runner for quite some time, but these numbers are much lower than I am expecting. I thought I read a post in another thread on this forum that Toyota underestimates the MPG?

Gas Mileage

The miles left to empty on the computer display is based on when the idiot light comes on telling you it is time to get gas. My 4 Runner has about 3 gallons of gas remaining in the tank when the idiot light comes on. I have measured mine manually against the computer and it is pretty much right on.
My Lexus works the same way!

I have 46K miles on mine with 70 percent highway. I have a lifetime average of 20mpg hand calculated. Many factors influence your vehicles efficiency. Driving habits, location, tires and numerous other things can make up to a 3-4 mpg swing. I have purposely stayed away from this thread because mostly it is a complaint thread with no basis on factual knowledge. Most of the regulars here that are driving unmodded vehicles get around the official figures for mpg. I will take 20 mpg overall all day long for a full frame vehicle in this weight class.

Will agree, esp. the complaint and many variables part. At end of the day, I can actively monitor my driving to increase or decrease mileage ... then you begin to understand the real world variables you have control over - and as importantly, those you don't. And that was the same with my Mini (read: these variables are not SUV specific). My wife has a CUV - a Lexus RX350 - I can consistently meet (or beat) its numbers. That's good enough for me.

Same here......20.9 on the last tank. This one shows 234 miles with gauge at 1/2.

I average 17.8 with city driving that is pretty aggressive, my driving is almost 100% city, I floor it at least twice per 20 minute drive. The mileage wasn't great for the first 5000 miles (15.4 MPG), but now at 6500 I am finally seeing some relief.

Driving 90+ percent city, I've been around 16.5 for the life of my truck to date. I gained 0.35mpg when I switched to my TRD rims from the OEM 20 inchers. At last calculation (last weekend) I was on 16.55 mpg based on gas receipts and trip meter reading (reset at each fill up).

Just the TRD logo itself will increase MPGs and provide another 110 horsepower.....

2012 Limited with 6000 miles and 8 ply BFG tires and I get 18 to 18.5 mpg every fillup. I am about 50/50 highway city and drive 75 on the highway. This is a little better than my 06 Tacoma which had the same exact tires.

10 ply duratracs and I continually get 19.5 +\- .5 with usually 70/30 highway or city driving. Hard to complain with that, my wife Volvo xc60 continually get 22.5 with 50\50 & she drives it like she stole it (likes the turbo).

2010 Trail Edition - completely stock (for now ) including the original Dunlop tires

I average between 19 and 21 MPG per tank of gas based on the display. My driving includes about 50% city and 50% highway. The best MPG on a tank of gas that I've ever had was 23.4 on a road trip where I pegged the cruise control at 73 MPH and only made two pit stops between fill-ups.

That said, as you can see from this post, there's a huge variance in MPG from person to person on this form. Most of the difference is due to different driving styles and conditions.

Awhile back Engineer1 posted a simple checklist to determine if you have a mechanical problem or your issue has to do with maintenance or driving conditions. I'd do a search for it and fillow his advise before spending time and money at the dealership.

Well thank you guys for the replies. I checked my tires this morning and they were at 27psi so I put them to 36 like I read on this thread and I will try the 94 octane gas and see if it will get better mpg.

I live in Montreal, roads in the city suck, but I will monitor this for a couple of weeks and see how it does. if not I will go to the dealer and get an appointment to see if its mechanical or the gas computer just freaks out or something.

I was just wondering, same truck with 4 gallons per mile seems quite a difference, but like you all said location driving style and all that seems to affect the MPG.

Going from 27psi to 36psi like you say will improve MPG. I think you will notice a dramatic difference. On the other hand, higher-octane fuel will not improve your MPG much, if it will at all.

My road trip mileage

Drove 600 miles total about 60% freeway and 40% 2 lane mountain roads up into Sierra's. I got 19.4 on the way up and 22.2 on the way back....retraced route. I have 2012 SR5 with Duratracs.

I'm getting roughly 16-17 average highway/local mixed, 2012 limited 4x4 with 15k miles. I think thats pretty darn good given my 2008 CRV was getting average 21 with similar driving.
