How accurate is the trip computer?

Mike:

Just use the temp and the clock just like the rest of the 4runner owners out there :D

It's fun to play with but it's not accurate so it's pretty much useless... You can dream and wish it was right... hehe maybe to make us feel better but we all know that it's wrong....

darn false hopes!

OK, just refueled on first tank since resetting trip computer. Trip computer reports 20.7 mpg, I calculate 18.88 mpg (310.1 miles, 16.425 gallons).

Net -- we all agree that it ain't very accurate.

wow, i don't even think i've seen a 20.7 on my trip computer when i was filling up (ever!!!)

yeah that thing is just not worth much ... just use the outside temp and the clock.. atlesat those works somewhat

I refilled my 2nd tank last week and calculated it to be 19.4 mpg (in stop-and-go Los Angeles traffic) and the trip computer shown 22.5. I'm impressed with the mileage (even though I didn't buy my 4Runner for mileage, right? :-) )

You guys are ruining my little 20+ mpg fantasy, dammit!

Average MPG is still between 20 and 21 for my V8...guess I'll just stop thinking about it.

That i-force sure hauls... ;)

I just did my first decent trip -- Little Rock to Dallas, interstate all the way. The trip computer was actually LOW -- it said 21.4 mpg, but I calculated 21.88!!

Admittedly, the conditions were perfect. We'll see how well it does on the return trip today.

I'm on my 5th tank since I bought my 2003 4Runner SR5 V8:

1st tank: 18.8 mpg
2nd tank: 19.4 mpg
3rd tank: 20.0 mpg
4th tank: 19.8 mpg

These are calculated numbers in Los Angeles traffic. The trip computer shown 3 mpg more.

testrider:

damn i'd be very happy w/ your figures....

i suffer alot cuz my drive is only 8 miles :(

13-15 is what i get! and no lead foot too... arg

Just returned from Dallas. When I filled up this morning, I reset the mileage on the trip computer so I could compare it on this one tank of gas. Filled up a couple of miles from home. Trip computer says 21.2 mpg, my calculations 19.0 mpg.

For the curious -- I believe the return trip had worse mileage than the trip to Dallas primarily because of a 30 mph headwind I fought the whole way. Also, there was pretty heavy traffic most of the way, and the construction didn't help.

Under the circumstances, 19 mpg didn't seem too bad.

True, but this was the first chance I've had to try to see if I could figure out how it was inaccurate. No such luck. So, it's just a thermometer and clock.

Mileage gauge

I have had my 03 Limited for a week and have found the gauge has been out approx 15%, of course that is higher than the actual mileage. I will see if it will get better(probably a dream??)
