So back in July, I drained my transmission fluid and refilled it. The process wasn't so smooth because I ended up stripping the drain bolt and the pan itself. This led to a slight leak over time because the plug/pan was not tight enough to hold the fluid. The leak wasn't too bad so I decided to fill the transmission fluid to the max (and I think I overfilled it).
Well I bought a new pan and plug from a junkyard a month later (August) and its been sitting in the back of my car. I noticed some jerking in the gears and knew it was because of the overfilling of the tranny fluid. Until a few weeks ago, I've noticed it getting worst (gears jerking) but I still neglected to replace the pan and put new fluid in.
I noticed whenever I put the car in reverse, it would hesitate and whine a lot with some hardcore transmission trembling before it would reverse. Yesterday I tried to go out of a parking lot and struggled to get out of a little slope. Once I got out I felt the transmission jerk and hit hard going into 2nd gear.
At work I parked and tried to reverse out but I could not go anywhere in reverse. I had to put in (N) and it started to drive forward. I pushed the shifter through all the gears and put back in reverse and the car still went forward even though I clearly had the gear in (R). Everything goes forward now.
I went home and replaced that pan and refilled proper fluid levels I've been neglecting knowing the damage was done but I was hoping it would fix itself. The fluid was dark, it was definitely burnt.
But the issue was still there. I tried to drive up an inclined slope in the neighborhood but RPMs were going crazy, but I drove it around with alot of transmission whinnying. I drove it back home today (2 hour drive) and the upper gears seemed to work fine, so it seems the lower gears and (R) are shot. Stop lights are horrible in that the transmission seems to make a lot of noise before getting up to speed.
I can't reverse, It seems (N) gear is now also a drive gear, I checked the new plug and pan this morning and somehow there is fluid around the plug (which I'm guessing the fluid lost all its viscosity on the drive home and is now thin enough to leak).
So in reality,
Can I still save it? I've had this car since freshmen year of high school, its brought me now through college. Over 300k miles on it. I've driven it for almost 8 years. Its my first car and I'm really torn over neglecting it and stupidity and laziness in a simple transmission fluid overfill that has caused it to go down....
