How do I get into 4WD?

Do you have the top right knob? If so, use that to switch to 4wd. I have never seen the interior of a 2wd 4runner so not sure what would be there instead.
Put the truck in H4 when off road or in wet/slippery snowy conditions. To do it you can be driving as long as you are under 50mph. Just push the little button in and twist. Don't drive in 4hi on dry pavement as turning will "bind" the drivetrain. Don't go above ~50mph in 4hi
Put the truck in L4 when going slow and over challenging off road features. To go in L4 you must already have been in H4, then you must come to a complete stop, put the truck in neutral, push the button and I believe down to twist to engage L4. There should be a button up on your headliner near light switches with ATRAC, which will help compliment the 4lo if you are in extremely difficult terrain. This should be slow/crawling speed. Do not go fast in L4.

I love having an actual direct shifter.. Everytime I see one of those 4wd selector switches... I have the same effect this guy has with autos.

Wow! Did you just have these these pics ready. Than you for getting into the details. I do have have the knob and will do as you suggested. I appreciate it a lot. I was starting to think I got suckered into the purchase and was just entertaining various thoughts in my head.

I did test drive a used 4Runner once and the dealer told me it was 4x4. It wasn't. If I wasn't familiar with 4Runner enough to know that it was missing the shift lever I might have been duped. That was the only 4runner I've ever actually seen that was 2wd, so even for someone who knows the difference it wasn't obvious. It also had a 4x4 emblem on the back. Also - another funny story about the same sort of issue. On a construction job once we were using a client's F550 dump truck along with our own dump truck to haul in some landscaping materials. It was a little muddy and I couldn't get the 4x4 to engage. I had no idea what was going on. I moved the lever. No front drive. I looked and there were no locking hubs. Turns out the truck had some aftermarket wheel covers and there were locking hubs inside. I had no idea not being familiar with the truck that it had locking hubs hidden inside the wheel covers. I had just assumed that no one was still selling trucks with manual hubs. Just one of those things that you might not know if you were new to this type of thing.
My main point is simply that I've been there too. Seems silly not to know, but I can see how it happens. Especially if you've never owned a 4x4 before.

So maybe you can answer the question: what is in the place of the shift knob or shift switch on a 2wd only 4Runner?

Hopefully you did get suckered for buying a 4Runner and not even know what 4WD is or how it works lol.
You are correct but it does not make it right. Basic questions should be entertained appropriately just as complex ones. And when agreeing to join this forum there are conduct rules. For example, there are a number of people that may ask how various "basic" questions to any mechanic but is the proper response to "read the manual" or does the mechanic use better communication skills to create a healthy dialog?

Another cupholder. It was a 3rd gen 4Runner. The limited has a 4wd button on the side of the transmission shift lever - but also a second lever for low range only.
