How do you fab?

GhostRing - did you ever settle on a rear swing-out? I'm still loving that rear slider design you have....just not sure where to tie it into the tow package or frame (just like you were having issues with). Same issue with the swing-out.

I think I'll keep the tire underneath for now...
I have a simple slip-fit system right now for the trasharoo & jerry can.
sketching out a can holder that can also pour without having to remove from mount.
Working on the finalized version once the holidays wind down

See I want to get my tire out from under so I can use that space for my aux tank. I've been collecting parts for it for a while so I don't have to pack jerry-cans. Plus I've been holding a 31 inch spare when I'm running 34's.
 
I recently bought a JD2 manual bender and die for 1.75" tube. I pulled HREW .120 wall through it to build a bed rack for my fathers tacoma. I have been more than impressed with the bender, and I vote you save up and buy it. It's not even that bad to have to bend manually.

If you like fabrication, you'll love the options a bender gives you! I don't do any fabrication professionally by any means, but having that tool is pretty awesome. Then people will ask you to bend tube and it can put some cash in your pocket!
 
I've had this one for years now. Fully hydraulic just turn the air on and sit back.

I bend 1-3/4" .120" DOM all the time with it and no issues other then having to reinforce the base frame.

If you were closer I would say just come by and we would bend you need. I could bend what angles you need and ship to you if that would help any.
 
I've been eying up the Rogue Fab tube bender setup, nothing set in stone, but it looks like a nice enough setup to build some bumpers and sliders with.

OP if you're looking for someone to make bends for you, i "think" Ram Steel Co might do bends in tube for a little fee, I think I remember seeing a little sign about it last time I was in there.

Great idea - that was where I was going to buy the steel from anyway. I'll ask them. Long-term I still think I'll pick up a JD2, but for this project I'll contract out.
 
When I was building my front bumper, I needed tubing bent for the headlight hoops. After not finding anyone local to do it, I sent Adam at 4xInnovations a drawing of what I wanted. He bent the tubing for me and shipped it to me for a very fair price.

I just don't need to bend tubing often enough to warrent the need to buy a bender. It would be cool to have one though.
 
Good to hear it's worked well for your buddy. Pieces I've seen bent in those style benders typically are really flattened out in the bend, particularly in the 90 degree bend desired by the OP. I've heard some have had success packing the piece with sand and capping the ends prior to bending to help maintain shape, but who's got time for that:biggrin1:

I'm all for making something work, but it's so much more satisfying to use the right tool.
well, as long as you remember the harbor freight bender is a PIPE bender, and not a TUBE bender. it bends pipe very nice, since that's what the dies are made for.
 
Key word there is "pipe" bender, while what the OP really needs is a "tube" bender. The former is for transmitting material from point a to b and is measured based on nominal internal measurements; the latter is made for structural purposes and the sizing is based on external dimensions.

That being said, you probably could build a swing out with pipe, but it's kind of "low-brow" fabrication. Obviously pipe is a big no no for something safety oriented like a cage.

My advise to the OP would be to keep your eyes open for a used JD2 or Protools manual bender with an appropriate die. Either buy it with some friends to spread the cost or sell it when you're done and recoup the lion's share of your investment (provided you're willing to give it up!)

Are you saying that "Pipe" is typically measured by its ID (Inner Diameter) with walling being a secondary/less critical measurement; while "Tube" is typically measured by its Wall Thickness and its OD (Outer Diameter) is a secondary measurement?

I always assumed that the difference was mainly in how the material was bent, with piping having that "crinkle" bend to it and tubing having Mandrel Bends to it.

Yep, that what I'm saying. Pipe is measured by ID and tube is measured by OD.

Keep in mind that some pipe is mandrel bent, such as nicer exhaust systems.

correct. the reason for that is, pipe is use to transfer material, making the ID most important.

except the crinkle part. pipe bent in a pipe bender will be nice and smooth.

pipe will also have a more pronounced weld seam, whereas tube will typically be very smooth, due to the manufacturing process. which is the true difference between the two.

yup.
because of this, the OD is slightly different between them. enough to cause problems when bending, with the wrong dies.
