How do you mount your ski's and snowboards?

I have a thule that I usually use in the winter for my snowboards, and a roof cage for the summer for various other camping stuff and my spare tire. I am in the process of getting larger tires for my rig and will be unable to but my spare back under the rear for the winter, I'm going to have to use my cage all winter leaving me with no storage for my snowboards, how can I mount the snowboards to my roof cage? Any ideas? What do you guys use to mount your winter gear?

My plans are, I have a Yakima rack and when I get a basket I am going to go with the Yakima Loadwarrior. This way I can mount the board racks on the basket. I know you can buy a cross bar for the basket to allow you to do so. I am picking up some yakima control towers, 48in crossbars, and a couple of Rock Mount bike racks tonight because I dislike the factory rack.

You could always ditch the roof mount rack and get a hitch mount carrier.

What kind of basket do you have?

Might be kind of hard to help if you don't know what basket you have. Makes quite a bit of difference.

After doing some searching I found a picture of it, I'm still not too sure who makes it as I got is second hand from a buddy.

meh i just chuck mine in the back, i got the loadwarrior but to be honest it's much easier just to throw them in the back when you head out and give them a quick wipe down and chuck them in there on the way home much easier then climbing up and down trying to lock the ski's in place the only time this is a bad thing is if i have more then 4 people in the car other wise someone's getting skis in the back of the head for the next 45mins til we get to mountain....


side note, this is meant to be the worst winter in 55 years here in the pnw, that secretly means the best winter for us skiers, Mt.baker here i come!

also i'm stoked cause I'm buying an old e-350 with 4x4 conversion and making it into a camper for my skiing trips, i also ready got propane heat,dual batteries,2000w inverter,sink,stove,folding bed and a bunch of other stuff in my vw bus and i'm gonna rob that and chuck it into the new van for a completely self sustained winter camping set-up.....man i'm stoked for this winter!

my vw bus on the inside, the brown cabinet on the side is a cook stove,refrigerator,sink and where my heater is stored

as i was putting the floor in, it's pergo with 3 layers of insulation underneath
stays pretty warm when it gets cold out!

thanks man, i can't wait! i got a few spots i'm really hoping to make it out to this winter you ride? if any of the C.O. crew that i keep in touch with wants to come out and go ride in the Wa just hit me up! i got a spare bedroom and am about 45 mins from 2 separate mountains

Yeah I ride! Not as much as I would like though. I used to work at a snowboard shop for about 4 years when I was going to college and I got a free season pass to 3 resorts so I used to go like 60-70 times a year! Now I only get to go about 5 or 10 days/year if I'm lucky. It's expensive now too! You're right, that music is pretty bad haha, but the video is cool. I even saw a little England in there!

.... I wish I could toss them in the back but 4 people most times and all their gear takes up a lot of room. I think I'm going to have to fab something custom up. Shouldn't be all that hard. Feel free to help out on ideas of what you guys think may work. That van sounds like it'll be awesome for road trips!!!

They make wakeboard racks for boom towers on boats that hang off the sides. Maybe you could adapt those to your roof rack somehow and use them for your snowboards/skis? Just thinking outloud..

when i was looking at this all you really need it a u-shaped hanger with a wide mouth and tong, drill a hole for a through bolt at the opening of the u-shape and slide a lock pin through like you'd use for your trailer hitch.

or if you want to spend the money either buy the yakima adapters or go teh wake board route like brain suggested.

Sorry, I don't know what to tell you. I went a different route and bought a Yakima roof box (Platinum Pro, 18cf) years ago and haven't looked back.

It's pretty slick how it mounts; it has clamps that grab the cross bar with levers from inside the box. Once you tighten them up and snap 'em down, they stay locked into place and are tamper-proof. Works kind of like a vice-grip, no tools required. Once you have them dialed in for your cross bars you don't have to mess with them. On/off the truck in a couple of minutes (literally). Plus, the box keeps your gear clean.

if you have a hitch just get a hitch mount carrier, your rack won't really allow you to do much else with it.

you could always get a rear bumper with tire carrier for $1000 - $1500.

I wouldn't recommend putting them up any higher, your going to have to get a mount for an extension ladder if you do, then your back to square 1.

i ride over 100 days a year, and untill last week my 4runner was my only vehicle. I just threw all my crap in the back, I usually have the seats folded down, and riding that much means that 50% i go up there alone.

just huck it in the back. I have crammed 5 people and 5 boards in my 4runner with no roof rack.

well then again we are all park kids so we have short boards...

IZZARD! Nice shots! are those all taken in PNW? I recently finished building a sleep platform/storage box. (very similar to skyrat's on YT). Looking forward to sleeping in the 4r this winter. Nothing better than waking up to tons of fresh!

OP, the idea has been mentioned already, but Thule makes this for snowboards.

I think Im going to order those ^ they seem to be the best option that i have found. I'll have to fab up something to extend my rails longer and have them slightly stick off the side.

I'm wondering about going with some sort of roof set up for my snowboard. I usually just throw it in the back but I've been thinking of mounting it outside just to keep the interior dry and clean.
