How does ATRAC work??

All of the above plus incremental price for a relatively unnecessary item to 95% of buyers. But there would likely be a LOT of warranty claims with an IFS locked front diff.

Strange to hear the engagement of the stock locker is so flaky. The third generation locker was always pretty quick to engage.

My e locker taking a while to engage is probably because I am generally on high traction rock with MTRs at 8-10psi, so it is almost always under some stress. When in sand or loose rock it is always pretty quick to engage/disengage.

Maybe I'm naive, but it doesnt seem very complicated to come up with a way to jam/mechanically lock the gears of an open differential.

ARB gets about $1000 for their locking diff. Even if the increased cost over a regular diff is only $500, that is a very large number for a manufacturer. They sweat every $10 that goes into a car, because that all adds up, and the more expensive the car is the fewer sales they get.

Add in to that the fact, as others have brought up, that people would then end up breaking IFS components. So warranty costs would increase.

Yeah. It kind of snowballs. Yes you can stick in an ARB for a grand. But you still have a significant weak point in the axles and other mounting points and supporting elements that would be in need of significant upgrading to handle a locked front diff (and even still there would be risk of breakage and therefore warranty claims) for use by the masses as a factory-equipped option. So by adding what we think is an additional $500-$1,000 to the price of the rig, in reality the cost for this functionality would be 2-3x this cost to make it work as reliably as Toyota would (should) expect.

My is 2008 SPORTS edition, but it doesn't have Atrac button, so it doesn't have Atrac, right ?

Nope, it isn't disabled. Atrac will still work on all 4 tires in 4low like normal. You will hear the brake pedal make a grinding noise which occurs when Atrac is working.

When you engage the rear diff locker, Atrac will only work on the front 2 tires.

No, it should still work on the front wheels, and it will work on all four wheels when the rear air locker is unlocked. It doesn't know that there is a locker, it just senses the speed of each wheel to check for slipping wheels.

Hey all,

I have a 2007 Limited v6 4wd and I am wondering..

Does my 4runner have Atrac? How do I know if there is, or isn't?

If so, how do I turn it on or activate it? There's no physical button, like in the 5th gens, or fjc's.

Thanks

Yes, all 4th gens, that I know of, have ATRAC.
It is enable automatically when switched to 4low.

When a wheel spins and it activates, you will hear and feel a grinding sound behind the pedal.

Is it only when it's in 4lo? I was thinking if there was Atrac, it would also come on in 4hi, with the Center diff locked.

Good to know :)

I don't think it comes on with 4hi, I might be wrong though. It would be pointless if it did IMO. The operation manual will probably say.

I've read a lot of posts about ATRAC and the different versions Toyota put out. Toyota did produce different versions of ATRAC depending on model and model year.

The 4th Gen Limited 4.7 V8 4WD version appears to be on all the time as soon as you start the engine.

Limited 4.7 V8 is different because it's in 4hi as soon as you start the engine, there is no 2WD mode.

I haven't tested ATRAC on the '07 or '08 scientifically, running it through different terrains, but I do know I was backing into my steep driveway with 10 inches of wet snow and ATRAC kicked in on the '07 Limited in 4hi.

It wasn't the TRAC deal, the engine cutout, it was low speed crawling over the curb in 4hi and up the driveway, center diff unlocked.

'07 wasn't doing so good backing up in 4hi in 10" of wet snow, then with a bit of wheel spin it started digging in with Michelin MS2's. When the front wheels hit the curb it struggled a bit to get traction then when ATRAC hit all four wheels it leapt uphill in 4HI.

I heard it clicking in 4Hi, and when it clicked the truck moved uphill. YMMV.

Gotcha. Just a random question since I think ATRAC works in 4hi on the 5th gens.

I'll look through the operations manual. Thanks.

99% it does, but it's not as aggressive in 4hi so you won't notice it as often as if you're in 4low. I use my ATRAC often because a lot of the trails we run are loose, steep, and rocky.

Dumb question, but is there a sure way to tell if ATRAC is really working other than to hear/feel the brake modulating as mentioned?
