How far can you go on empty?

you can always do it the logical way. Go until the light turns on...fill up. 17 minus gallons filled.

I always thought it was 17...there is a huge possiblilty that i could be wrong.

never have gone on E and filled it up. I try to fill it up at the 1/4 left mark.

I'm pretty sure it's an 18.5 gallon tank.....i wait until the gas light comes on and then go another 40 or 50 miles and then i fill up....and it still doesn't reach 18 gallons.

In the 4th gens, we have a gauge that tells us how many km we have left. I was once in the middle of nowhere with only 7km left in my tank.

Auto = 314mi city / 370mi hwy

Those range numbers are if you used the whole tank and most people fillup at 15-16 gallons. Real world experiences are what counts.

Well your not supposed to run it dry might pick up some particles in the tank, but i did make it about 40 miles when my light came on. When i got home we had no power so no gas, that was a scare till the next day. I just made it!

Even if you run your truck "dry" it'll still have over a gallon of gas in the tank so you don't have to worry about picking up any particulates from the bottom.

Run it dry, but have a small tank with gas just in case.

I reset the OD when the gas light comes on and I have run anywhere from 60-80 miles and been able to put 15-16 gallons in the tank.

you have to realize that one of the larger recalls related to the 3rd Gen was the fuel gauge/sending unit. Have you ever noticed going to sleep with half a tank and waking up with 3/4 or 1/4 of a tank in the morning? Granted this doesn't effect all 4Runners of this time, but a lot of them. Go figure. Mine does it all the time, but somehow when I'm low it reads correctly, same when it's full, just not inbetween. :beer: <-- it's kinda like that

When the gaslight comes on in my '98, it's got appx 4 gallons left in the tank. I believe the tank size is 18.8 gal.
