How fast is too fast for a 5th gen?

Ive done about 105 top speed passing. We have quite a few highways posted at 80. Pretty easy to jump up to 100 passing a string of cars. 4runner doesn't skip a beat. Cruising at 85-90 drops mpg down a little but not too much. Maybe 18mpg. Not sure where the governor is set. My guess is 112mph. Like the rx350. 100 doesn't feel much different from 85.

I lived in Montana when we had no speed limit. Out gm trucks were governed at 98 so that's where we set the cruise control all the time. Its not much different from your typical commute. Just a little faster.

I only stay in the left lane when I am the fastest, which is pretty common. Of course NM drivers are slowwww. Now some place like Miami....

Yes, off-road trail tires are rated for lower speeds, but they can handle what we can dish out. Modern vehicles are VERY safe at high speeds, including trucks. A mini van can thrash an old muscle car on a track. Governor on my Titan and my former Xterra crapped out at 120-126, and on roads out here thats doable,(See 285 to Roswell) however a bit illegal so not something I regularly do. Not to mention gas mileage gets crazy bad. Now take a modified rig like my current trail rig, and ya, a lifted truck with lots of weight, soft suspension big ole tires...you definitely slow down to be safe.

Sure the 4Runner does not handle like a sports car, but its ridiculous to think you cannot drive fast and be able to handle emergencies.

I used to drive my other cars always over 100 but since I have gotten my 4Runner I haven't taken it above 80. I drive like such a grandpa, usually keeping it around 70. Doesn't help with the lift and tires it eats gas but with the traffic here in Cali I need to make sure I have the room to go that fast and be prepared for any situation.

Cause you're blocking the left lane. Learn to drive correctly. Keep right except to pass.

Had mine up over 100 MPH on Saturday. Jerkoff in the left lane was driving too slow in the lane. I kept my distance and he finally got over after passing some slower vehicles. So he decided at that point he wouldn't let me pass him (he was doing 65 in fast lane and now all of a sudden he decides he's going to do 80 in the slow lane). Put the hammer down and before I knew it he was way back in my side view mirror and looked down to see I was going slightly over 100. Didn't feel like it but was on a straightaway though and it was flat. Handling felt good and was more worried about getting a ticket than crashing.

Fastest speed possible

Max acceleration is 32 ft per sec per sec (32 ft/sec^2, aka gravity)
Max speed is about 220 ft per sec (220 ft/sec, aka terminal velocity)
That was over a cliff in Utah.
There was a bit of roll, pitch and yaw that steering would not correct.
Braking was ineffective, but no skidding.
I was in complete control until we hit bottom. :hello:

I try not to be the fastest car on the road. I'd rather let someone else get my ticket.

The 4runner is an amazing machine, but it wasn't designed to break any speed records. Still, I've found my TE to be great on long highway drives.

There are a number of highways in TX with a 75 mph speed limit, and most folks treat that number as a minimum speed. I'm personally comfortable up to 80 mph, maybe 85... maybe... but then I generally ease off the accelerator.

At what point do you start easing up on the gas pedal? I'm leaving this open ended, but let's assume a highway driving situation, with clear visibility, "good" road conditions and minimum load.

ive taken her up to 85 and feels ok there. but one time when i was heading to dallas from san angelo on I20 i took a 2011 Jeep Cherokee to 100 mph.

Got my old Wrangler TJ up to 90-95 once passing a semi coming down a hill on I-44 somewhere to the southwest side of St. Louis. :wow: My butt tried to eat my underwear, and I got back into the right hand lane as soon as possible and never did that again.

Hit 100 a couple times passing in the 4R. No big deal in short bursts on straight road. Not sure I'd cruise it there for long periods of time or in strong winds though.

My T4R is smooth as glass all the way up to the speed limiter - just don't expect to take a moderately sharp freeway bank designed for 65MPH at those speeds.

This thing absolutely loves 80MPH+ on the smooth open freeways! Way smother than my '99 TRD Taco V6 by a country mile

Every time I add another accessory that hurts my gas mileage I find myself going a little bit slower to get better MPG hahahaha right now I actually follow the speed limits exactly and when nobody is behind me actually try to go 5mph under :boink:
