How fast is too fast for a 5th gen?

The governor is set to right around 118-119.

I remember being shocked at how high the limiter was on the 4runner, and how well it drove at 100mph on the stock tires. I was wondering how much better is high-speed road handling of the grand cherokee, since everyone is praising its comfort.

Not a how fast I've been, but I can tell you what mine was very comfortable doing.


Last summer, we left for a trip to south Florida. I had 900 miles to clock before I would reach the Hotel for first leg of our trip.
So off we went.....
Any place I could run the speed up to 80MPH comfortably without risk of a traffic issue, that's where I set to cruise. (Ran this most of the time )
13 hrs and 20 minutes late, we were in Boca Raton.
The truck felt very stable and responsive at this speed with no other issues.

Round trip was approx. 2200 Miles (IIRC) and fuel mileage was 19.2 MPG for the trip.
This was before lift and w/ stock tires and rims and loaded with everything one needs for a vacation to paradise, lobster dives included.

No comparison - my mom has a 2014 JGC with the Hemi, and it's apples and oranges between it and the 4runner. TONS of power & it handles great. Very smooth running down the highway. All in all, a very fun unit to drive.

Still not for me though - I really prefer the 4runner and how it's a little rougher around the edges and larger in a couple dimensions. And, you know.......reliable.

Maybe they're trying to convey a sense of sportiness, haha. I've never thought of the JGC as a shoe, but I definitely remember saying that about the first gen Focus hatchbacks when they came out.

Having owned one, it's the smelly thing on the bottom of my shoe when I think about it. :ybrick:

My shoes tend to last longer then the jgc. Resale value is probably better also.

Here in So Cal only a Prius driver does the speed limit. 85 -90 is the norm. Pegged on the road to Vegas is the norm, dancing off the rev limiter becomes the game.

Yea, like you can drive 85 on the Balboa Peninsula or PCH.

People here in So Cal still drive at the speed limit once in a while. Around my town I get passed going 65 but at 75 I may be fastest car on the freeway. No one drives 90 unless they're racing sooped up Civics and other small cars on the freeway. And the cops call that reckless driving. That ticket will get you a free "Go To Jail" card, an impounded car and lots of points on your driving record.

California has some of the worst roads in the country. I wouldn't thrash my vehicle driving fast on them. The speed limits in Nevada and Utah are higher. The freeway to Lost Wages is a straight boring desert run and yea, people drive to Vegas at 90 mph. If you're really driving 85 to 90 on So Cal highways think about slowing down.

After reading this thread for a few days, and I kind of just laughed. I used to own a 3rd gen and the highest I got it up to was like 90 before the wheel started rapidly shaking. I was uncomfortable so I slowed down to about 80 and stayed there. This whole how fast is too fast thing is funny. It's whatever speed you feel comfortable with.

I have lived all over the country and currently reside in Orange County and have noticed California has some of the best roads. Try drying in the east coast where the snow plows tear the hell out of the road and have pot holes every feet that can swallow a car. The roads there are terrible and so hard on your vehicles.

Of course you can't drive that fast when your stuck in traffic but when there is no cars people will drive that fast. I got pulled over on the 91 freeway doing 88 (not in my car) and the only reason he pulled me over was because I passed the flow of traffic that was doing about 82 and the speed limit there is only 65. He even bumped me down to 77 because it was my first ticket it 6 years and I told him I just moved here.

The speed limits on the freeways in Utah and Idaho have recently been bumped up to 80mph. That means 90 mph without a ticket and 100 mph for only a small fee (much less than in Cali)! :dancin:

I've now towed plenty of times @ 80 with no issues. When I'm not towing I'm trying to keep it at a fuel-friendly pace while not impeding the flow of traffic.
