How fast is too fast for a 5th gen?

Guess you have never driven PCH south of Corona Del Mar to about Morro Point because the exotics & sport bikers beg to differ as to how fast they drive or ride that section. No chít Sherlock I can barely do 25 on the island.
Or south on the 5 driving down to San O to surf where the LEO's have no on-ramps to hide at. Pretty sure that section is nicknamed the So Cal Autobahn.

[MENTION=119386]Mmikey[/MENTION] Yes, seems like almost all drivers in ID and UT take that 80 mph as a required minimum. Doesn't matter if they're driving a new Beamer or a Ford Pinto. Summer or winter.
Let's just eliminate all speed limits and let the Darwin factor kick in.

When the wife got rid of her x5 for the trd pro it was because the 4 runner was much better on these terrible Tucson roads. Speed was never an issue because the 4 runner is still capable of running 90+ if necessary. No it won't run 150 mphs like the x5 and cruise at 100 mphs but it is a far more capable SUV and less power and performance was a very happy trade off.

Hit 90 the other day on an 85mph road here in Texas with zero issue, except for piss poor gas mileage. I tend to not drive over 90 period, no matter how open the road is or good the weather is.

I hit about 105mph (170 kmph) fairly often in the SR5 to pass on the highway i.e. short bursts so I'm cruising at that speed for more than 10 seconds at a time.
Zero issues and zero concerns.

No such thing as too fast, but there certainly is an argument for "too fast for OEM brakes".
throw in "too fast for OEM brakes on considerably lousier AT/MT compound"
then a sprinkle of "too fast for OEM brakes + AT/MT compound + loaded up with weight from (insert offroad/overlanding gear)
All to say, all 4Runners are lousy when standing on the brakes compared to other vehicles on the road. Certainly, the case with the OEM P-rated HT tires, exponentially worse once we're done "modding" them.
Really ought to imagine we're driving on snow/ice with respect to following distances behind regular people cars. I'll bet that every single sedan made after 2002 will stop shorter than a 5th gen, and the only vehicles worse would be other similar 7+ passenger SUV/Vans/Trucks.

Consumer Reports gives it a 4/5 for braking and 2/5 for "Avoidance Maneuver" has a Max Speed of 48 mph whatever that test might be.
IMHO opinion you don't buy a 4R for it's high speed manners or braking prowess. Its basically a fancy ox cart that fell off Toyota's development radar 10 years ago and popped back up again last year when they added a halfway decent Nav system. It does what it does well with fewer of the usual headaches other vehicles have and it lasts a long time.
Better enjoy it now because the Gen 6 is going to be a pile of expensive shit, it will be even more goofy looking than a Lexus and almost everybody will complain about it. Hope not but probably.

Have to agree. This is my first "truck like" vehicle and I don't do over 75 in this thing. Anything faster scares the $hit out of me. You all are crazy for doing 90 or whatever. An avoidance maneuver in a 4R at high speed can't end well. Given this I am fine with it. I didn't buy it for winning any races :trophy:
I tested my top speed
I am like 90% sure I will get criticized heavily on this. I test the top speed on mine on a flat dry lake bed with no one around at 5AM in the morning. I hit about 118mph for a second.
Drives fine, feels like 65 on freeway. lol

Dry lake beds are fun. I hit the 117 governor on them with my Tacoma. It felt like a brick going 117.
