how hard is it to replace the interior lighting?

Well, I was thinking of starting off with the area that is under the plastic (the temperature gauge, speedometer and the gas gauge) there are three LED's there right?

But would it make sense to do the AC, keyring and cigarette lighter at the same time? Do those have to come out to get to the speedometer area anyways?

And i think i agree with you that blue would look good with my blue neon. I like that idea better than the white for me.

Yeah your correct their are 3 behind the speedo, gas, and temp, and rpm. and it would make sense to do the keyring when you do the gauges, because they are both in the same vicinity, however, the a/c controls, are a whole different story, they are set apart, but not that hard to do, you could do them all at one time or take your time and do a/c seperate. But it would be conducive to do the keyring, and gauges at the same time. Oh and do the cigarette lighter with the a/c controls. I put another led in cigarette lighter, but my bulb holders threads kinda are stripped somewhat, idk it wont hold right and the light wont project downward correctly, and i also think there is a green film *not totally sure though* so it may not be blue if you use blue led.

I was reading this: 4Runners.org - White Face Gauges write up and it looks like I wouldn't have to take apart half of the things in the write up.

Wouldn't I just have to take out the 2 screws on the top of the "instrument cluster" as he called it?

And then the 4 screws to remove the cluster? And then simply unplug the cluster and be able to access the lights?

Or do I need to remove the dimmer dial and the alarm and all of the black trim pieces from the lower left side of the 4Runner?

Yeah what he is doing is completely opposite of what your doing. He is taking the actual case apart and placing white gauges over the stock. Your replacing the bulbs, which can be done from the back of the gauges.

All you would do is steps 1-3. After that flip over to the back then...

Thats the writeup i used for the swap very clear, and has pics! Hope that could help any sorry this took so long been busy working all day.

Oh and with the dimmer/alarm. Idk how to remove the alarm from that spot, it seemed like to much work, so i kind of slid the trim around in a circle to the left and let it hang there.... not the best idea, but i didnt want to fight it and break something.

No worries on the ?? its always good to know what your getting yourself into haha. Less chance of messing something up if you do your hw too.

I think that about covers it to my understanding if your ?.
Oh and yeah you remove the main bottom panel, the case around the steering wheel, the trim over ignition, black trim over gauges, then gauge cluster themselves. take your time unplugging them, they are a slight PITA getting your hand at the right angle behind the gauges to unclip them.

That sounds about right! Btw if you have a 99, and try to swap the blinkers, it has a green film over them, so it wont be whatever color bulb you put in. I was kinda upset when i found that out. :-/ haha

Yeah i ordered at least 2 extra bulbs depending on how cheap they were. It doesnt hurt to have extra haha. Not sure if im not supposed to post links for other forums, but im only registered on here so that counts for something? haha

I just wanted to post a reply to say that I completed the installation of LED's in my 1996 4runner and it looks great.

I purchased blue vleds and have attached a pic so everyone can check them out. The installation wasn't too hard but you really need to stay organized with the screws. I put them in separate ziplock bags and labeled them as I worked.

haha yeah man that's how I felt. It ended up taking me about an hour and a half to finish. The blue lights on the floor are blue neon lights that I installed a while ago

unfortunately the clock LED can't be changed... However I think the A/C one can be but I left it green... for now at least.

:hungry: OOO I want blue now! haha I really like the white but the blue deffinitely looks really really good! But i already have everything else in white so i dont wanna drop more $ on converting... blah. I may just keep my white im satisfied haha. But that came out great man!! Yeah the screws i kept most of the big ones on my floor mat and the small ones i set on the passenger seat haha. Not most effective but worked for me haha. Are you satisfied with the v-leds any troubles? btw, have you done the shifter yet? I think that one makes a difference once you swap it too.

And yeah clock cannot be swapped but you can unplug and just use your radio its all on your own opinion.

Thanks yeah I was torn between blue and white but decided to go with blue.

I didn't do my shifter because I didn't order lights for it but now I kinda wish I did.

For some reason I stupidly ordered two green LED's for my signal lights because I thought they were yellow for some reason but they are already green. I might put them in the shifter or something instead.

I am very happy with the V-LED lights and I don't have any hot spots at all. The color is nice and doesn't make it too bright or hard to see the road at night.

Glove box light 1-#74
Dome light 2-#DE3175 (1 Front, 1 Back)

Sorry i posted that from mobile so couldnt elaborate much, but i guess i understand you needed the exact bulb # for each which 4 R got for ya. It does correspond, just find whatever bulb it specifies (i.e. Dome Light and it says DE3175) It just shows the # next to whatever part you need, but in your case, i understand they dont elaborate and say the exact #, but he got them so your good.

Yeah for some reason, the gauges bulbs sizes varied in the years, i used #74's in my 99.

So, I did this on my first 4Runner when I turned 16 and had the mod bug (about to turn 18). I used Superbrightleds.com and went with red...it's my favorite color.

It has some hot spots, but it wasn't bad or bothersome to me at least. I did the dash and center console, but unfortunately I don't have a picture of the center.


And I apologize about the HUGE picture, iPhone camera sucks and I couldn't compress it any haha
